This is a nice change for GaSou, but I wonder what's going on at Kent? From the article, it appears Kent initiated and wanted to drop this series.

Looking at their future schedules, the only games they have agreements on past 2018 are @ Arizona State and 2 games (H&H?) with, of all teams, Kennesaw State?? 04-jawdrop

This screams to me they are de-emphasizing football, if not more.

I assumed they are getting a P5 payday. There are rumors that UConn could go to the Big East in all sports and park football in the MAC. I don't believe them, but if true then makes sense that some of the MAC schools would need to clear some room on their schedules?

An alternative could be that they were making room for an H & H with NMSU. Since Martin has ties to Kent, that would not be surprising, to help out a former coach.

Not sure it's more recognizable. When I hear Kent State I think about Nick Saban, Antonio Gates, James Harrison, Julian Edelman.

When I hear New Mexico State I think of............................

When I think of Kent State, sadly, I think of this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

Also, on a lighter, happier note, I think of their basketball team made it to the Elite 8 as a 10 seed, with an upset of 2nd seeded Alabama in the 2002 NCAA Tournament.

I was thinking the same thing with KSU. I grew up 40 miles away from KSU and remember that event vividly.

Our AD, who monumentally failed in hiring Tyson Summers, came from Kent State so I doubt we got any money. Look for a post-season search for a HC and an AD at the end of another horrible season in '17.

We wont be hiring a new HC. An AD? Maybe.

I would expect to see Kent State announcing a 1:1 with a Power 5 soon.

Even if we don't get much money out of the buyout, it's not like TK's phone gets blown up with people wanting to play us, so we weren't willing to include a large buyout.

Are you taking a dig at NMSU? Because I would so much rather play NMSU than some MAC team I've never heard of

I would want an opportunity to expose my brand in Ohio which is a fertile recruiting state vs revisiting an old conference foe in the state of NM. A lateral move at best.

It looks like Kent schedules two games with an FCS school. They play Howard in 2017 & 2018 then KSU in 2019 & 2020. Based on their schedules with money games, I would imagine this is a way to spread out one large payment over multiple games.

Sounds like an athletics budget in trouble, not de-emphasizing football.

I agree Kent State's schedules going forward appear to be a bit strange unless it's to maximize money games.

They look a lot like ULM. The majority of MAC programs don't get a lot of return on their investment in the sport despite having low costs. 5,000 people in attendance and 12,000 tickets sold don't exactly support the notion that growth is occurring; and in business, if you aren't growing you are in decline. More than likely a way to have cash reserves as they can't recoup expenses any other way.
