Deflategate: The CAA Version (Women's BBall) - Lady Seahawks pick up free win

CAA Reverses Outcome of Two Women's Basketball Games

RICHMOND, Va. (February 2, 2017) - Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Joe D'Antonio has decided to reverse the outcome of a pair of conference games involving the College of Charleston, William & Mary and UNCW women's basketball teams due to the use of improper basketballs.

The improper balls were used in the College of Charleston's home victories over William & Mary on January 6, 2017 and UNCW on January 8, 2017. While the official results, team records and statistics from the games will not change per NCAA policy, William & Mary and UNCW will be awarded a win and College of Charleston will be charged with two losses for purposes of seeding the 2017 CAA Women's Basketball Championship.

"The College of Charleston regrets that this unintentional situation occurred," College of Charleston Athletics Director Matt Roberts said. "We accept full responsibility for what happened, and appreciate the efforts of the Conference office to find an amicable and fair resolution to this matter. We fully support the decision of the Commissioner as it relates to the two games in question."

The CAA's decision on the matter was made after extensive conversations with all three conference schools that were involved, as well as the NCAA. Commissioner D'Antonio had wanted the College of Charleston to fully vacate both victories, but was informed by the NCAA that this is not a situation that would meet the current definition of a "forfeit" or a "no contest" per the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Book.

"Current NCAA rules do not allow for a vacating of victories for this type of situation and subsequently the games in question will count fully for NCAA RPI and statistical purposes," said Anucha Browne, NCAA vice president, women's basketball championships. "The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee has been made aware of these circumstances and the teams involved in the event it impacts team selection and seeding for the 2017 championship field."

So we just picked up a win when it comes to seeding purposes. Wow. I'll take it any way we can get it at this point!

Means that our CAA record will be considered 4-5 and we move into a tie with Towson for 6th place, ahead of Northeastern, Charleston, and Hofstra in the standings.

WTF.

Okay, well. Where does that lead us to in the seeding? I'd like to know more details on this just because I'm curious. Was there intent? The above doesn't really get much into that at all.

We're now tied for 6th with Towson. Since we have the tiebreaker with them currently, and the top 6 get a "bye" just like the men, this is pretty crucial for us.

Charleston also drops from 3-6 to 1-8 and last place. Yikes.

And nobody noticed this during the games? Not the players? Officials (who check the balls ahead of time)? Coaches? Water boy? Amazing.

I'm not a basketball player, but I would think that any of the 30 or so players who were on the court at during both games would have had their hands on the basketball at some point, and said "this just doesn't feel like a regular basketball". Like if I turned on my computer and was using a different version of Excel, I would notice the difference.

According to an AP article in the DNR (Harrisonburg paper), the UNCW players and coach did point it out to the refs, and the refs insisted it was the correct size and did nothing about it.

So why then should the team get punished twice? Complete garbage by the league if it is true that they reported it and the officials did nothing.

Lose by 39 and get the W ? That's a joke for sure.

While the officials screwed up, I think it is solely on the home team/to provide the proper balls.

Most basketballs have the size printed on them. It is also very easy to detect the difference in size just by picking the ball up. If I lose by 39, I sure as hell don't want the game given to me because of the ball size. UNCW should decline if possible.

It doesn't count as a win for UNCW. Just in the seeding in the conference tourney.
