WMU QB situation - Post NSD 2017
If what I am hearing is true, and Flacco intends to leave the program, that presents WMU with a bit of an issue at QB. That would leave us with NO QB's with any game experience...

Looking at the QB's on the current roster (without Flacco):

Alex Mussat - Redshirt Freshman in 2016 - Interesting situation here... I don't remember recruiting this kid and his roster card lists his HS as Univ of Illinois. Transfer? Maybe I just don't remember him...

Brendan Tabone - Freshman in 2016 - Orchard Lake St. Marys - two time state champion QB

John Wassink - Redshirt Freshman in 2016 - Probably the best of the bunch going into this year as far as rounded QB... Then again I have never seen him in live action at D1 level.

Reece Goddard - New Recruit - Freshman 2017 - Looks like an athletic kid with great presence on film, good arm... can run out of the pocket. Who knows...

Not a list that right now gives me much confidence that we will do well out the gate from the QB position. Must keep the turnover margin in our favor this year... Going to be tough with such youth at the helm...

Would be fun if Wassink came out composed and dropped dimes all over USC.

Indeed! Speaking of Southern Cal, the position group that needs to have a great game is the O-line. They absolutely NEED to keep U$C DL from hammering Wassink. If he goes down in LA, it will be a very long season.

Even if Flacco returns we won't have a lot of experience there.

For whatever reason Fleck or Ciarocca did not give our backups much time last year, even in blowouts.

Wassink by all indications is a special QB talent, so wouldn't be a big surprise if Flacco transferred to an FCS and followed his brother's path. The plus side to this situation is we have one of the top stable of running backs in the country that also now adds Falcon into the mix, and will be a force in the ground game to take some pressure off a young QB. Also helps that we should have the top defense in the MAC.

If Flacco vacates a scholly why not take a flyer on this kid? Big, strong, accurate seems determined.

Would have to think a grad transfer might be in play if Flacco does in fact leave. Can't go into a season with 2 scholarship QBs....

Nobody wants to watch the Wing. A buddy of mine went to Georgia Tech and says the games are miserable to watch.

Based on Lester's decision to hire Indiana's former offensive coordinator, it looks like WMU will be staying with a spread-option set. That's fine and the Broncos ran v-e-r-y effectively from it.

I would hope we do not have too many system changes based on the success we had last season. This program does not need to be re-built.

It's possible a grad transfer could happen, but it likely would've happened for this semester if that was coming...but it's possible.

I doubt a new staff wants to start with a 5th year though new to the program, and redo it all over again the next year. There's a big advantage for a coaching staff to come in with a guy like Wassink and have 4 years with him there.

Wouldn't that require a slightly different breed of offensive linemen too? Smaller, quicker?

We should stay with what has been working .

Fleck did that with Terrell.

I'm with Doo on this one.

We might take some lumps at the QB position this season, but I'd rather we have quarterbacks that will be at our helm 3-4 years, a la Terrell. Not much of a fan of plugging in a grad transfer to squeeze one year out of him, even if he's more experienced, just to break another one in next fall.

Wow lots of reaction to my facetious idea of a Deleware, Navy, Army or high school standard set. I wouldn't expect a complete overhaul of the offensive philosophy. I would actually like it stay close to what we've been been running. Maybe more 2 TE formations. And a grad transfer at QB is a good idea for depth. Probably not many options out there though.

There are always options for grad transfers at QB. Only 1 guy starts on all these teams. Some grad guys have 2 years eligibility and some have 1. We will likely need one just for depth. 2 scholarship QBS is dangerous with one being a true Freshman...

I got beat-up for suggesting the Single Wing. Let whatever happens, happen. Some have narrow comfort zones.
