On the eve of NSD as all the importance is placed on star ratings of recruits it's interesting to examine how these things do and do not translate to winning. Several programs played up to their potential based on talent levels(Alabama, USC, FSU) some exceeded it, Clemson, 10th by 247sports. And Western far exceeded, 85th most talent to 15th AP. While others failed badly (ND, Texas, MSU). Interestingly Illinois and Northwestern had much more talent than showed on the field.

The biggest factor must be the ability of the staff to coach up that potential and put players in position to succeed. This is demonstrated by the successful teams vs the underachievers. fleck and his staff were very good at this. The other is the ability of individual athletes to affect the success of the team (Deshaun Watson and Corey Davis) regardless of stars. And for the talent to develop depth in all positions. Obviously, the better the base of talent the higher the potential.

I think Lester has done well to secure a base for a partial first recruiting class. Win or lose this season Lester and other new coaches can't be fairly critiqued until AT LEAST 2 years down the road when the systems are in place and their choices of players are contributing on the field.

Fleck and staff had the ability to get good players, and then take advantage of their talent by keeping attitudes good with the team chemistry, and running smart offenses and defenses.

Having very talented receivers and quarterbacks does little good if you either don't throw the ball, or if you throw it only when defenses can predict you are going to throw it. Likewise, great running backs are wasted if you run only when defenses know you are going to run. Keeping things fresh and unpredictable puts players in a position to succeed.

Recruiting is obviously the foundation to success. Lester inherited a difficult situation this year, having been hired so late. I think he scrambled pretty well. Next year is the key though. And if he can have a big year on the field, I think the recruits will have confidence that the program is still in good hands and we will have a great 2018 signing day.
