Tim Lester's calculated plan
Interesting article about how Lester incorporates his math abilities into coaching football. He has figured out which stats really matter, and therefore which things to focus on.

Sounds like Lester is a nerd of Jim Tressel and Nick Saban-like proportions. I love it!

(No, I'm not suggesting that Lester is going to dominate like Saban, I just like coaches that take this type of calculated, meticulous approach to the game. Whether it translates to success for WMU is yet to be seen, but I'm optimistic)

RE: Tim Lester's calculated plan
Knowing your opponents weakness, and exploiting it are two totally different things.

ie

This is all well and good, but it needs to translate to the field to matter.

Hopefully it will.

I thought it was great how our last coach would go for it on 4th down more often then the more conventional coaches. I hope math leads Coach Lester to the same game plan.

There are lots of schools that went for it on 4th down more than WMU did last year, but we had the 2nd highest conversion percentage.

I think that 4th down try's are more situational than routine strategy. Most often in tight games or playing from behind and the short punt vs going for it. We didn't find ourselves in too many games that required 4th down conversions. But 15 in 14 games was not a conservative number vs the rest. Maybe a couple at NU and I remember one from Zach to Corey in Dallas. But if you have weapons and tactics to convert that can be the difference in a W or L.

RE: Tim Lester's calculated plan
The most important stat that I can think of is W's and L's.

Crunching numbers is a good metric and a nice tool, but I hope it is not TL's primary 'strategy'. I think you need to prepare for what each new team offers. Lester really stressed YAC, which is nice, but if you're up against a really good secondary you won't get many. Then what? A weak DL would predicate slants, screens, and running it up the gut. Grinding it out.

I really became a fan of PJs clock management style. Our 7 min, clock-eating drives that resulted in scores were a thing of beauty. All while our defense was resting on the sideline. With quick strikes, the other team gets the ball back too fast, too often.

Math is a language. It's a basic, simple language. It allows you to boil complex events down to simple descriptions. And it allows you to focus on simple methods to exploit events, to the exclusion of distracting matters. In that respect it's just a tool, but a powerful one.

A carpenter can build beautiful homes with top quality tools, but he still needs to know how to employ them-that comes with experience.

5 yards per carry, and very little turnovers are the stats that I want to see. That and the number three --- as in three star recruits
