RE: Game Week: Kent and @NIU
I kinda of agree that perhaps some fresh blood assistant coach wise is in order. I'm not sure that Murphy will gone please remember that we seem to be budget constrained these days. And not all of Heather's coaching moves have worked out, the women's volleyball for example has been a disaster. However if we do change coaches we will want a coach that believes in the 2-3 zone on defense and from a school that does it well.

RE: Game Week: Kent and @NIU
Since we are on the topic, what are Heather's hires:
1). volleyball,
2). football,
3). WBB
4). Anything else???
So Heather gets good marks for hiring Chris Creighton but 'failing' or at best incompletes in volleyball and WBB????
As far as WBB, I kind of got to know some of the staff, a little, around the time of Heady's death. The one I did NOT get to know was Finley. She was the assoc. head coach and most likely to be the internal hire (the rest of the staff was pretty young with limited D-I experience). So this one is Castro vs. Finley, which would have been the better choice? (actually I do not know Castro either so I'm pretty well out in the dark other than assuming the players wanted Finley and Heather went outside for Castro).
As I've said a number of times, I do not consider changing head coaches a panacea. The probability of failure for a program like EMU (MBB) which had been down for a long time is fairly high. Ditto for a school like Detroit-Mercy which did well for a while a coach's son starred there and now back in the tank.

Why would we continue to play a defense that doesn't work?

I take a slightly different approach:
The head coach picks the defense (and offense) so I would not expect another coach to play the "Murphy Zone."

I have heard alternate discussions as to if Murphy has a year after this one.

The fact is she got rid of a well regarded coach in volleyball. Re Castro please read my about a dozen posts that i thought it was a good hire and to be patient I was notes about cc when he was announced but I have been consistent in my support of him I point out that any time you change coaches there is risk

Isn't easier to bring a coach in that fits with the talent on the roster than expect players to fit your style

On paper Castro seems like a good hire, but quite frankly most hires on paper seem like good hires.
It takes about three years to make a fairly accurate assessment.
The situation is 'dynamic' - it is a coach moving into a difficult situation where apparently the star players didn't get the person they wanted and left.
Who knows sometimes: right person in the wrong situation (or wrong time) doesn't work out. He is not a Midwest guy and I think that will hurt him.
I'll repeat a comment that I've made before: Namely, we lose Webb and Deans after this season. We lose two of our best players on a team which is what 1 - 10 in conference. That is scary. Yuge rebuilding job for WBB. I can't 'Sunshine Steve' this one.

But what I don't see discussed often is that since Murphy's first year, he has had the same assistant coaches. Brown, White, and Mondro have been on staff each season. I like all those guys, but if Murphy is staying on, is it time for Lyke to lean into Murphy to hire 1/2 new assistants? Go hire somebody who can draw up some offensive looks.
I'm sure each of the 3 assistants has played an important role in getting this program turned around after Ramsey, but it's time for a shake up. Football is a different sport, but ADs have no problem firing coordinators (eg Brad McCaslin). I think someone new talking in Murphy's ear would be a wise idea.
Great post/suggestion, Frank. I really don't feel great about replacing coaches as it "start over" is usually ugly and you may not know if it was a good/bad hire for some years. (Plus it disregards the accomplishments Murphy has made). Your method shakes things up while mitigating consequences. Though I am not sure if how conventional of an approach that would be.

4) Wrestling- Dave Bolyard
He is doing well. Two good recruiting class and last year was the most qualifiers to the National Tournament in a decade or so.
5) Gym- Santos and then Brown.
EMU Gym has had the best 2-3 seasons in program history.

Epps.
If there is a coaching change I'd think Epps could be the first to leave (before he actually comes).
I think some of the bigs are starting to look at him so if there is any doubt about EMU he could look elsewhere.
If there is a coaching change I'd think Epps would be most likely to leave (not come), then JT4, and then Bond (in that order).
We have some key sitouts like Minnie (a possible impact player), P.J. (a probable starter at PG) and Harris. I'd think it would be hard for them to transfer after a sitout year.
