The eight most impressive first-year coaches in college basketball
http://www.cbssports.com/college-basketb...is-season/

Tim Jankovich, SMU (18-4, 8-1 in the AAC)
Jankovich was the coach-in-waiting who rather abruptly became the coach-for-real last summer, when Larry Brown and SMU couldn't come to terms on a new deal. The Ponies haven't been worse off without the Hall of Famer around. SMU is NCAA Tournament material, and to me has the most talented starting five in the American. The Mustangs were really good last season, remember, but were not eligible for postseason play due to NCAA sanctions. SMU is currently 22nd in KenPom.

Johnny Dawkins, Central Florida (14-6, 5-3 in the American)
Dawkins makes the list, though his Knights have dropped two straight, falling at Memphis and losing at home Wednesday to another coach represented on this list, SMU's Jankovich. But UCF is already at 14 victories after the program averaged 12 the previous three years. Dawkins made the transition from Stanford to UCF, and he has coached this team to a top-10 defensive efficiency standing, by far the best in the history of the program for as far back as those metrics can be tracked. Thanks in part to 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall, opponents are shooting 38.5 percent on 2-pointers, which is the most damaging defensive rate in college basketball. This could be the sleeper team to steal the AAC's auto bid.

How did a first year recruiter obliterate #6 FSU? Odd.

Not really. The bar is low at GT and he doesn't have to live up to monstrous expectations. He is coaching lose with the correct support system in place.

He's only 39 years old. Jackets had a freshman score 35 points last night. Future is bright. #22 Defensive Efficiency is no joke!

Good for GT. He was never going to live up to the expectations at Memphis.

Agreed. I think the pressure and parents of players meddling got to him. He was SO young when he got that HC job. Probably best for both sides that they parted ways.

He was a kid from Georgia who committed to the former Ga Tech Head Coach...so Pastner should thank his lucky stars.

Okogie committed to the former GT Staff back in Sept 2015 (signed in Nov 2015) and this player noted one of the main reasons why he selected GT was because of their Head Coach (who was fired months later)

03-lmfao You don't know Memphis fans well. We all wish Josh the best. We just don't want him coaching our basketball team again. Ever. He ran our program into the ground, and it will take us awhile to recover.

We went nowhere his last 2 seasons, recruiting had gone down the chute, and we had maybe 10 guys transfer out in 18 months.

So no, we're not sick, lol. Maybe Josh finally learned how to coach. We'll see. I hope he does fine. We were personal friends, but I don't want him back.

Both GT and Memphis are better for his departure.

I wish nothing but the best for Josh, he's a good, caring, hard working person who I believe learned some valuable lessons in Memphis.

We're very happy with Coach Smith.

Good for Josh he did ok at Memphis and learned on the job (hard knocks).
Memphis overpaid him from the start.

It's pretty simple really. He is maximizing his second chance. He knew the way he ran things at Memphis was wrong. He making it right at GT.
