Exclamation UAB Brings Back Football In 2017 / Will Face Coastal Carolina
Looks like UAB is back in the fold and will play a SBC team in their "inaugural" season. Interesting match-up.

I don't know if the UAB pres needs to be strung up or commended for his treatment of that program.

It's not over for them... if they can't prove they can be successful and get more than 10,000 out to a game they will be back at square one.

First season or two will likely see a surge in interest, year 3 or 4 will be more telling of their future.

Game One could have 45,000+. I think Georgia State had 56,000 for their first game. After that it will drop off to normal numbers.

2016

No football program in 2016.

09/02 - Alabama A&M
09/09 - at Ball State
09/16 - Coastal Carolina
11/18 - at Florida

2018

09/08 - at Coastal Carolina
09/15 - Tulane
09/22 - at Texas A&M

2019

09/07 - at Akron
09/21 - South Alabama
11/02 - at Tennessee

2020

09/12 - Akron
09/26 - at South Alabama

2021

09/25 - at Tulane

Our game should improve their attendance. If God blesses me, I will be at both games.

Is that a stipulation of the program coming back? I haven't read anything like that.

I believe UAB has a stadium in the pipeline for 2019, they're on solid footing.

They're lucky to have Bill Clark, who stayed through the lost years, but 2017 UAB will basically be 2015 Charlotte, maybe worse. I'm thinking 1-11 in 2017.

I don't know, they have recruited a lot of FBS transfers and JuCos so they are going to have a lot of talent.

RE: UAB Brings Back Football In 2017 / Will Face Coastal Carolina
It's untested waters in the modern era of college football. The only situation that can compare is SMU post death penalty, but they de-emphasized football so they couldn't get any players that could compete in the Southwest Conference.

UAB does have talent. However, the year of just practicing in the fall while literally every other program is playing is really rough on those players. This team is going to be a Frankenstein creation of JuCo's, transfers and the under-recruited prospects and it depends on how the leadership is, because they'll take some L's.

LOL GaSt had around ~30,000 for their opening game. Still impressive but no where near 56k

Well, a team that hasn't played a game in two years SHOULD win at least six in C-USA. 02-13-banana

I always find it interesting how UAB athletics is put to some higher standard just to have a right to exist in this state.

Troy barely broke 16,000 attendance when we were shut down in 2014 and your entire athletic department didn't even break $500,000 in ticket sales. Not a word about the sky falling for you guys. Nor a bunch of scathing news articles mentioning the nearly 76% Troy athletic subsidy the next year in 2015 (least none that I saw). No articles about Troy needing to shut down it's men's basketball program due to it's lack of success because it's just draining money from other areas such as CURING CANCER and men's track and field.

See what I mean?

You're lucky Troy doesn't have to deal with the constant scrutiny.

You're lucky Troy doesn't have to deal with the constant scrutiny.

1987 Arkansas legislature introduces a bill to get Arkansas and Arkansas State to play and includes a tournament with Arkansas, Arkansas State and UALR (who had just made it to the NCAA second round losing a triple OT game to NC State). Bill gets amended to only include football, passes the House then dies. NIT pits AState and Arkansas with UA winning in OT. Two years later Hog friendly legislators pass a law changing how athletics are financed, AState goes to I-A to get the revenue required to survive, UALR meets fund-raising deadline with less than 24 hours left to save their program, most junior colleges in Arkansas drop athletics, larger NAIA schools push to move to Division II because NAIA dues are based on enrollment making the NCAA cheaper.

2015 Virginia adopts athletic finance caps that probably would have blocked ODU move had they waited longer to move.

Nebraska Omaha gave up football, supposedly to get their budget within the constraints placed to allow them to move Division I.

While what happened to UAB isn't the norm it isn't that unusual either.

CBC is a very good coach and a stand up person, but UAB will be hard pressed to break even in 2017.

No. UTSA had 56,000 for their first game in 2011 at the Alamodome. USF had 49,000 for their first game back in 1997 in old Tampa Stadium (the Big Sombrero). Those are the 2 highest attended opening games for a program.

No offense meant by this... but it makes a big difference when Troy is their own university system, instead of being an extension of another university like UAB is.

UAB has more watchful eyes that want to cap the success of that program. Why would the University of Alabama want UAB to have a successful football program? All that does it steal UA's thunder in the Birmingham area... that's the problem.

Troy doesn't have to worry about that.
