Clemson coaching changes
Clemson announced the retirement of DT coach Dan Brooks this past Saturday at the championship celebration. Today they announced the promotion of defensive analyst Mickey Conn to Co-DB coach where he will assist Mike Reed. I assume that current DE coach Marion Hobby will take over coaching the entire DL.

http://theclemsoninsider.com/2017/01/17/...ive-coach/

Conn joined the Clemson staff a year ago. Prior to that he was the head coach at Grayson (GA) HS since it opened in 2000. He played DB at Alabama with Swinney.

RE: Clemson coaching changes
I'm really hoping the Hobby to Jaguars rumors do not come to pass. Brooks was also an associate head coach, so add associate head coach to Hobby's title (in addition to co-defensive coordinator), add another few years on to his contract with a large raise and call it a day.

Yeah, I would hope that Hobby got his fill of coaching in the NFL when he left Clemson the first time to go to the Saints. If Hobby is to leave I think at that point Dabo is going to have to go out and get somebody to coach the DL.

Supposedly if the 10th asst. coach is approved (and it appears it's going to happen) they are going to promote Lemansky Hall from a staff position to the coaching staff.

Jaguars hire Marion Hobby

http://www.tigernet.com/update/coach/Jag...?ref=front

Quote:Clemson co-defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach Marion Hobby has been named the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive line coach. The Jaguars made the announcement Wednesday evening.

So far in his head coaching career every time Dabo has had to replace someone he has done so in outstanding fashion. From replacing Billy Napier with Chad Morris, to replacing Kevin Steele with Brent Venables to replacing Chad Morris with Scott/Elliott at OC and Brandon Streeter at QB coach he's upgraded every time. Time for him to work the magic again.

It might sound crazy, but Rex Ryan?

It would be a hoot, but Rex hasn't coached in college since leaving Kansas State in 1999 so I would question his chops as a recruiter.

agree. it would be a flashy hire, but not great for recruiting. same with buckner. needs to be a good recruiter and proven DL coach that puts players in the NFL regularly. no idea who that might be. I just pray that chris rumph isn't on the list. he can go sit on a fire ant hill as far as I'm concerned.

From my understanding not only has that bridge been burned the charcoal created has been burned and the ash spread in Lake Hartwell. The only way Chris Rumph will ever be on the sidelines of Death Valley again will be on the visitor's side.

The Clemson 247 site reporting that Clemson is set to hire Jacksonville State DL coach Todd Bates to the same role at Clemson.

http://clemson.247sports.com/Bolt/Breaki...--50739879

Bates played his college ball at Alabama, where he was recruited by Dabo.

Jax St bio
http://www.jsugamecocksports.com/coaches...h=football

Quote:The 2015 campaign took Gamecock football to new heights. A 13-2 record included a 12-game win streak that was one shy of the school record and also featured over 50 school records. The Gamecocks’ lone losses were to No. 6 Auburn in overtime and to North Dakota State in the FCS title game.

JSU was ranked No. 1 in the polls for the first time in school history and held that ranking for 11 weeks. The Gamecocks went unbeaten again in the OVC to win their second-straight title and was warded the No. 1 national seed in the FCS Playoffs. JSU stood up to that seeding, downing No. 7 Chattanooga in overtime in the second round before routing No. 8 Charleston Southern and No. 7 Sam Houston State in the quarters and semis, respectively.

Bates coached a defensive front that wreaked havoc on opposing offenses, leading the OVC and ranking 12th nationally in total defense with just 300.3 yards allowed per game. JSU led the nation in tackles for a loss after recording a school-record 136 stops in the backfield, an average of 9.0 per game that ranked fourth in FCS. Devaunte Sigler was an All-OVC pick and signed a free agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the conclusion of the season.

His first season was an impressive one on the defensive front, where Devaunte Sigler became the first Gamecock to claim Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors since JSU joined the league in 2003. Sigler was also an All-American up front in guiding a pass rush that amassed 27 sacks.

The JSU defense made great strides in 2014, finishing second in the OVC in total defense and pass defense, while leading the league and ranking 23rd in the nation in rushing defense at just 127.7 yards per game. That stingy defense helped JSU post a 10-2 record, including a perfect 8-0 OVC record and the school’s fourth OVC title.

RE: Clemson coaching changes
Clemson makes the two hires official.

http://www.clemsontigers.com/ViewArticle...=211431821

Quote:Mickey Conn and Todd Bates will join the Clemson on-field defensive football staff for the 2017 football season, Head Coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday. The openings on the staff developed when defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks retired after the season, and defensive line coach Marion Hobby accepted a position as the defensive line coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Conn, a teammate with Swinney on Alabama’s 1992 National Championship team, was on Clemson’s staff this past season as senior defensive analyst and is set to coach the safeties and work closely with Mike Reed, who will coach the cornerbacks.

Bates will coach defensive line and comes to Clemson after three years coaching the same unit at Jacksonville State, a top 10 program in recent years at the FCS level.

“These are two outstanding men who are very good fits with our staff,” said Swinney. “Of course Mickey was on our staff last year and already has a strong knowledge of what we do. Todd is the same age I was (33) when I came to Clemson. He has worked our camp in recent years. I remember one of the camp days Coach (Dan) Brooks came to me and said, ‘Todd Bates is the best coach we have out here.’ I have been following his career closely.”

Conn was already out on the road recruiting, naming Bates this week will have him in place for this weekend's huge Elite Junior Day where a number of top targets for the 2018 class will be in attendance.

Thought it was interesting that Bates coached at a camp held at Clemson a few years ago, where Dan Brooks told Swinney that Bates was the best coach we have out here. This hire was a few years in the making. His personality and values definitely fit the culture. I think this is going to work out very, very well.

Dabo seems to have a plan for everything. People like to give him hell for his hokey down home style but the man knows what he wants. He knew Morris was going to be a short-term solution so he had Scott and Elliott be more involved with gameplanning so they were ready to step in when Morris left. He had worked with Streeter when Streeter was a GA under Bowden and had kept up with his progress at Liberty and Richmond. He wanted Conn on staff a few years ago and finally got him to take the analyst role now he's on the field. He's known since he hired him that Brooks wasn't going to be here 10 years and I imagine he had a very short list of coaches he wanted and I imagine that after Brooks made his statement Bates was at the top. It certainly helped there was a personal connection with Dabo being his recruiter but Brooks isn't known for hyperbole so I imagine it made quite an impression.

Going to make a prediction.....if he doesn't get poached elsewhere for the job Brandon Streeter will one day carry the OC title at Clemson under Dabo Swinney.

Let's think this through. If Scott or Elliot get poached, does Dabo make the other the sole OC or does he make Streeter the Co-OC?

I imagine it will be the latter, just like I expect sooner rather than later Reed will carry to Co-DC title like Hobby did.

One thing is for sure....with the departures of Brooks and Hobby and the additions of Conn and Bates our coaching staff's average age dropped significantly. Every on-field coach now except Caldwell is in his 40's or younger.

Probably right. Reed sure was a great hire, very pleased with his work, especially at CB. I'm pretty bullish on the Bates hire so far. Conn, I'm not so sure yet. I'd feel better if he had experience coaching in college. I said the same thing about Chad Morris too ?

Time will tell, but as one of two DB coaches I'm not too worried. He played DB and when he was a GA at Bama he helped with the DBs.

Supposedly Conn is an aberration in that despite his record as a high school coach in GA he is very well liked so I expect him to be heavily involved in recruiting the Peach State.
