Really sad that's one of the two that counted that year. The other one sucked, too.

This article is full of s***:

"When (Calipari) went to Memphis he was at, and this is hard to believe and hard to imagine, but I was at the big school, I was at Tennessee, Big Orange Country, and Memphis was a smaller school in a corner,” Pearl said at his press conference Saturday in Rupp Arena."

At that time had UT ever made the S16? I know they had not made an E8. Big school my ass.

If we're talking strictly the school, then he's right. But if we're talking the basketball program, then he's full of **** and he knows it.

Maybe this is the reason the FedEx big wigs were at the KY-Auburn game instead of the Memphis game yesterday

Don't ever count on Calipari to coach his way out of a tight spot.

On a side note, I walked into FedEx Forum that night with Kevin McHale. He was scouting for somebody back then. He said there were about 6-8 potential NBAers between the 2 teams. Wouldn't divulge who he was going to focus on.

We didn't have to vacate the losses too?

What, do you think the NCAA is completely heartless? No, they let us keep those.

Really great four years for sure. We had them before...when I was in school we made the sweet sixteen four years in a row, one of those years making the final four.

Was fun each time. As were others when you do not let your entire self worth be defined by every single turnover.

And had to play Phi Slamma Jamma two years in a row in S16 or we, in my opinion, would have had 3 F4s in 4 years. That team was that good.

In an odd occurrence, 2 programs ended Keith Lee's 4 seasons - Villanova and Houston.

That first Villanova game still ticks me off. John Pinone shoulda fouled out in the first half

Cromwell Coach John Pinone Sentenced In Federal Tax Case
Gets 6 Months Home Confinement
December 22, 2010|BY HILDA MUÑOZ, hmunoz@courant.com, The Hartford Courant

NEW HAVEN — — John Pinone, a basketball coach at Cromwell High School who was indicted earlier this year on federal tax charges, was sentenced Wednesday to six months of home confinement and an additional six months of probation.

Pinone pleaded guilty in October to a misdemeanor of filing a false tax return, said his attorney, Andrew Bowman.

Bowman declined to comment further on his client's case.

Thomas Carson, a spokesman with the U.S. Attorney's Office, said Pinone was ordered to pay a fine of $10,000 and to cooperate with the IRS to resolve his outstanding tax liabilities.

Pinone is still coaching at Cromwell High.

"John's been very up front with this. He has informed us of his status and where he was in this process and we have taken him at his word," said Superintendent of Schools Matt Bisceglia.

A person sentenced to home confinement can leave home for work, school or medical appointments, Carson said.

In March, a grand jury returned a sealed indictment charging Pinone, of Glastonbury, and Francis B. DelMastro, formerly of Wethersfield, with conspiracy and willfully filing false tax returns, according to a Department of Justice press release.

DelMastro pleaded guilty to a felony charge and was sentenced on Dec. 13 to four months in prison, Carson said.

According to the indictment, DelMastro and Pinone were the owners of the Civic Pub, a bar in Storrs, and operated under the corporate name Pindel LLC. From 2003 to 2005, the two obtained cash from the operations of Pindel and neither reported that cash as gross receipts on the tax returns filed on behalf of the company, authorities said.

They also did not report it as income on their individual income returns for the tax years 2003 and 2004.

The indictment also alleges that DelMastro and Pinone kept a set of books called "Weekly Draw Sheets" that included Pindel's actual gross receipts. But DelMastro and Pinone did not provide those books to the individuals who prepared the returns for Pindel and their individual income tax returns.

The total amount of cash alleged to have been skimmed from 2003 to 2005 was $130,050.

The indictment also alleges that DelMastro hid the cash skimmed from Pindel in his home, including in the freezer, cereal boxes, coffee cans and pots.

Pinone, 49, is a famous basketball name in Connecticut. He led South Catholic-Hartford to state Class L titles in 1977 and '79. He was the eighth-leading career scorer at Villanova University with 2,024 points, and had his No. 45 retired by the school in 1995.

He was a third-round draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks in 1983. He played one season in the NBA, then nine in the European League. His Cromwell basketball team won the state Class S title in 2009.
