RE: A proposition for UConn and Cincy:
Unless there is a competitive bidder, ESPN can and will offer peanuts.

We need Fox and others to up the ante.

That's just it. If it was believed that espn was grossly underpaying for the contract, you'd think FOX, NBC or CBS would put in a competing bid when it comes up for renewal. That they didn't tells me they don't see the product as being worth anything more than what espn's already paying.

I think with cable subscriptions tanking and CBS's sports network not exactly trending upwards, these networks are hesitant to bid anything until things settle down. I think CBS / FOX made an offer for the AAC but they weren't able to offer the exposure AND money that ESPN does. Maybe that changes on the next go-round, or maybe the American is a pioneer in offering digital subscriptions.

We haven't come up for renewal yet. I think we have to wait two more years.

...and I think Aresco is the right guy as commissioner for that negotiation given his former senior role at CBS Sports. Aresco was dealt a tough hand when the old Big East crumbled but has done a credible job. We'll need him to do his finest work two years from now. Other cable networks still need inventory and will bid; but who knows what telecommunications will really look like by then.

This.

If we added Wichita, Dayton, and VCU we would be back to being a power basketball conference.

Although it's possible that a midling basketball conference helps us do better in March. The old Big East was so brutal that we were always beat up and exhausted for the NCAA tournament.

Hey, this may be just the year to test that hypothesis!

If CBS Sports would make a serious run at being a real sports station like ESPN or Fox, I would not be surprised at seeing them throwing out a competitive bid for the conference. They would have to increase their streaming capabilities, get themselves put on some basic and secondary cable tiers across the country, etc. As bad as some of their on air talent is, they do seem to portray the conference in a positive light.

With that schedule, Cronin should get his own airplane. And Google Maps.
