Not to mention, Adonis Thomas, Sean Banks, Dejuan Wagner, Paris London, etc or all the other unheralded players that turned out to be great Tiger players like Brett Mundt, Earnest Smith, Russell Young, Rodney Carney, D J Stephens.

If the coaches can get it wrong this much, how can you decide who can and can't play by anecdotal stats.

Huh?

None of that really makes any sense.

The 1st group of people you named were all pretty much badass college players at some point. Austin, Adonis, Sean, Dejaun. Deuce had well known injury issues (like steel rods in his legs) and sadly Paris never lived up to expectations.

The other guys: Carney was the Indy Star H.S. POY and led his team to a state title. We all know DJ had two special gifts: his heart and his ability to jump really high.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and speculate that Ernest was probably a 10+ ppg guy in high school, considering I found one article that referred to him as "Former Whitehaven Star..."

Actually, after a little more digging, Smith was a star, pretty much anything but "unheralded." http://nyx.uky.edu/dips/xt7bnz80kq2w/data/0024/0024.pdf

As for Mundt, I have no idea what he averaged in h.s. but I'm gonna guess it was more than 8 ppg considering he almost averaged that in his 2 years at Memphis (5.7 ppg) before transferring to CBC.

Russell Young? He played 53 games in 4 years and scored a total of 181 points (3.4 ppg). Tiger great? Not sure how that is supposed to make your point?

I saw the Mundt boys multiple times in high school at JC-M. Even remember one game when their fiery parents made a move to get on the court after a rough foul situation, and got tossed out of the gym. Dad was a big boy too.

They were beasts. Not 20+ point guys every night, but they were tough. I don't think Bret came directly here out of HS. Seems he went to Bethel then transferred when we signed Todd.

My point is that it is ridiculous to speculate on a player's contribution based on some stats you pull off the internet about their high school or JC or international team careers.

The first group I mentioned were supposed to be superstars…they weren't.
The second group, although "Memphis" good, were under recruited and weren't expected to be stars, but they were great contributors to winning teams.

Maybe Azab won't be Keith Lee, but whose to say they he can't contribute to a winning team?

Agree.

I was watching Wichita State play on Saturday.

They have an unranked, unknown first year JC from deep south Mississippi who is 6-7, 215 on his best day...and they have him averaging 12 and 7 at the DI level.

However, I seriously doubt the kid plays this season.

RE: Azab!!!
Tubby Smith is convinced at this point that freshman Karim Sameh Azab could help remedy the lack of depth and size Memphis is dealing with this winter. He’s just not sure when the NCAA will clear the 6-foot-11 Egyptian prospect to play in a game.

Smith clarified Azab’s status Friday by telling reporters Azab is currently embroiled in an eligibility dispute after the NCAA initially ruled he must sit out this year and lose a year of eligibility earlier this fall. Smith said Memphis appealed the decision and hopes to receive a response from the NCAA “any day now.”

At issue is whether Azab graduated from a high school in Egypt in 2014 or Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago this past spring, according to Smith. He added that the process is taking longer than expected because both prep schools Azab attended upon arriving in the United States, including Hales Franciscan, have since closed.

Azab arrived on campus at Memphis after preseason practices began in October due to visa issues, “but if he were eligible tomorrow, he’d play tomorrow,” Smith said.

“He’s a guy that we could really benefit from having him because his bulk and his size and his basketball skills,” Smith added. “He’s a skilled basketball player. He may not be the fastest or the highest jumper, but he’s a very intelligent basketball player. When you’re 265 [pounds] and have those type of hands, that’s a gift.”

Sounds like he's eligible starting next year and will be a sophomore.

Unless the appeal is granted.

Maybe you're right, but I'm hoping for eligibility Tuesday night or Wednesday morning! 04-cheers

Ok, sure.

If you're going to put your head in the sand and not believe past performance is a future indicator then live on.

Perhaps you were one of those that insisted Damien Wilson was going to be an immediate impact player despite the fact he was sixth man for his HIGH SCHOOL team.

Quote:Post: #31RE: Damien Wilson
If anyone expects Wilson to play more than around 7 or 8 minutes a game, score more than 4ppg, get 2 rps and 1 assist, then that person will be in for a letdown.

Spoiler Alert: Damien average 1.7 ppg his frosh year in 4.8 mpg.

Or you were one of those who thought Dom Woodson would be an 8 and 6 guy even though he wasn't an 8 and 5 kid in high school.

(05-31-2013 11:31 AM)salukiblue Wrote:  He will be valuable in a couple years.

Next year 8-10 mpg tops, 4 pts 3 rebs.

Spoiler alert II: Dominic went for 2.5 and 2 in 6.8 mpg.

Or Nick Marshall.

(06-02-2015 09:03 AM)salukiblue Wrote:  Based on what other players averaged (on a proportional basis) if Marshall does play about 6 mpg in his limited role, he should average about 2.0 and 1.8.

Spolier alert III: Marshall played 9 mpg and averaged 3.1 and 2.7.

So, if you are hanging your hat on a 6'11 kid who averaged 8 and 6 for a school that doesn't even exist anymore is gonna come out and do that, they sure rock on. 2 and 2 would be about my guess.

Sadly, at this point, 2 and 2 with that size and a few hard fouls/screens would be welcome.

According to his averages, he'd need to play 12 minutes to get that many boards or half the game to get that many points. Don't think we can afford to have him in that long. If we don't get Chad back or Azab cleared, we have about a one-in-ten chance of making the dance. That's the only reason a coach would waste that much of a 6' 11" player's season (if Azab were cleared), and Tubby would do it, this season, in a heartbeat. So would I. So would you.

Agree. He can become a solid rotation player regardless of stats. Won't happen overnight or probably won't be MVP but can help.

This is good news IMO. I was afraid it was compensation they were really concerned about a la Kanter. At least this way we know worst case is next year.

Azab would be a little harder to post up than Jake. He could sit under the goal on both ends and provide some relief - regardless of points.

If we could have Azab and Rykhoek next year, we'd be fairly solid at the 5. If Dedric sticks around, we could be pretty good.

I wouldn't count on any of these as of right now, just because 2 of the 3 have to deal with the NCAA.

However, better than average chance for Rykhoek.

Azab - who knows if he sticks around, but seems likely at this point that he will at least play next year.

Dedric - all word of mouth has him gone, but anything is possible.

Solid wouldn't be the term i would use. We would have guys whose measurements say the are 5s, but solid to me means they will contribute.
