Is this new league going to have enough revenue to per the average player $50K? Can football, pro, college, and development pro over-saturate the media outlets to extinction to the point where only the strong survive?

This could be the awesome game changer needed to destroy the current power structure of college football and force it to rebuild in a more balanced manner. Hope it succeeds!

I don't know...minor league football just doesn't work. Or at least it hasn't yet. USFL, XFL, in door league...all failed.

Cheers!

Well maybe by starting small they will have a shot at success.

USFL wasn't minor league; they competed directly with the NFL and initially won, drafting top players out of college; the problem was that Trump and the USFL invested so much money in the anti trust lawsuit, that when they only received a $1 dollar award, they went bankrupt.

That tweet embedded in the article is gross. "NCAA free-labor monopoly", as if players don't receive a $100k education or upwards of $250k at private schools. I hope this fails and fails miserably. Their product is obviously going to be trash, and I don't want to see college football watered down like college basketball and baseball.

Frankly, I thought that was the ultimate option for the G5. Leave the NCAA and start a league sponsored by the NFL. The league would pay their players a small salary (treating football like a part time job), looser restrictions on qualification, and the players the ability to leave after one year. The NFL would cover salary costs, insurance, and would be a TV partner.

I hope it succeeds because then maybe it will help break the P5 monopoly.

If I have the opportunity to go play at Michigan and get a Michigan degree, do I pass on it for $50k/year for a couple of years? Doubt it. Would I pass on UH and a UH degree? Possibly.

Point being, if it succeeds (highly unlikely), I'd bet it would pull more from the G5 than the P5, only making the gap you're hoping to see disappear even bigger.

RE: Watch out CFB...
1. Many players that start at a program are not given degrees of value. They're just shuffled through eligibility and then tossed aside when they are no longer of use. Scholarships are NOT four-year deals - so at any point this free "education" may not wind up leading to anything.

2. The league would not recruit G5 guys for their player base. Besides, going after 3 star guys hurts the lower P5 schools more than anything - since those programs MUST get the 3* kids they can in order to be competitive against real blue bloods.

3. A watering of the product may be a good thing - it would put the focus back on the institutions, their integrity, and also having a more balanced athletic program.

It probably won't last, but I think it's a nice idea.

I've said before that forward-thinking universities will one day break from the NCAA in order to have "professional college sports" whereby they can offer salaries and contracts to recruits, at least in football and men's basketball. If this new league fails, I bet it will open the door for the professional college sports landscape to begin to form

No college will ever do that because the fans that pay the bills have loyalty to the school not mercenaries. No way in hell I'm shelling out thousands of dollars for unaffiliated minor league football. I support a team built on the common experience of attending SMU. Look up into those stands where the big money sits. They are supporters of the university. Now the ones sitting at home watching on the internet don't have loyalty to anything but those spectators are irrelevant to college sports

Winning and wearing the helmet and uniform attracts far more fans than the "common experience." See: all the big programs and their bogus "university studies" degrees. And no one says that these professional athletes wouldn't also have to have some minimum of class attendance...at least not until the next system gets set up.
