Sources tell FootballScoop Cal considers Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo a strong candidate for their job. More….

http://footballscoop.com/The-Scoop/

Cal: Sources tell FootballScoop Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo has been contacted by Cal and is considered a strong candidate for the position. Several other programs have reached out to Niumatalolo over the past few seasons, including within the past month. None, so far, have been able to entice Niumatalolo to leave. Perhaps this will be the one… Will update as more is clear.

If BYU couldn't grab him using the Mormon card, I doubt Cal will be successful in their endeavor as well.

Maybe they like winning?

FBS Option teams are combined 36-17 this year in two Power 6 conferences, the mwc (arguably top of the G4), and independent Army.
Option can win in a contract-bowl-conference: Paul Johnson at GT is 70-48 (42-30), has only ONE season under .500 in conference and just won the conference championship and the Orange Bowl in 2014.
Maybe the powers that be at Cal remember Paul Johnson OC, Ken Niumatalolo RB coach, and option Navy beating Mariucci-coached Cal in the '96 Aloha Bowl.

You and GrayBeard are right - a little risky for Niumat to consider a school which wouldn't be as committed to top level football as Navy.

Don't they have a new rule starting next year that 80% of all recruits have to have at least a 3.0 GPA?

If so, your choice is simple, Mike Houston. He was the coach of my Alma Mater, and raised our profile. Obviously he has done the same for JMU.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Cal is looking for someone who is used to winning with that sort of restriction.

I can't imagine that they will be able to win in the Pac-12 with that sort of requirement at a high clip, but if there's an offense and coach that can do it, it's Niumatalolo running the triple option.

Not sure why he'd want to leave Navy, except if he thinks he can win a national title somewhere. I think Paul Johnson has shown that isn't easily done at another school that has some academic restrictions.

As someone who enjoys watching BYU, I'm glad he didn't take the job and that ended up with a coach who went back to the old BYU passing game instead of the hurry-up junk Mendenhall was running.

That is a sound analysis of why Cal would be high on Niumat.
From the other side, Niumat and Johnson are very different people with very different motivations. Johnson definitely wants to prove that his offense can win at the highest level, including an FCS national championship. He has that chip on his shoulder, and at some level all Navy football fans knew he would move on to try to prove that. I don't think Niumat has that same driver. He turned a similar opportunity at BYU - coupled with intense personal drivers - to stay at Navy. He has more belief and love for Navy's culture and mission than Johnson ever did. He might listen or interview but I am less worried about Cal than I was about BYU last year.

I'm not trying to be rude, but I don't think you understand how our offensive system works. Paul Johnson set passing records at Hawaii with the same offensive system.

Regardless, I don't think BYU intended to switch to the flexbone. It doesn't fit their personnel well for one thing. The West Coast with a heavy passing emphasis fits them much better in terms of who they recruit as lineman and athletes generally.
