Baylor's #1 ranking makes me think of...
The time we were ranked number 1 going into Blacksburg and we lost to VT. Dickie V kept saying "there's no way Memphis State is the best team in the country". We had just moved to the top spot when we lost that game.

Seeing Baylor play made me think there is no way they are the best team in the country.

Makes me think where we would be if we hired Drew instead of Pasnter.

The Calkins hit piece put an end to that. The press always knows best.

So calkins calls the shots on coaching hires?

You'll recall that the bumbling circus that was our administration already knew one scandle was about to hit, and ended up hiring Mr Squeaky.

Who could forget this little gem:

So the conversation turned to the Memphis coaching search, and the Division I head coach asked who the Tigers search team might be going after next.

“It could be Scott Drew.”

The Division I head coach paused at this.
“Do they KNOW Scott Drew?” he asked.

Evidently, not.

Or they know something about the Baylor coach that nobody else seems to know.

A national television commentator (by phone): “WHAT?”

An assistant coach in the SEC (by text): “Wow.”

Didn't we lose @ VA Tech twice after becoming #1? 1983, and 1986?

That article alone should get Calkins an ass kicking.

Didn't he write a similar bash piece on Jerry Gray ?

Wonder if any of that is in his book that he pimps 24/7?

Really, it's not his fault that RC was spineless though.

If you have conviction in your candidate, you don't worry about what the local columnist writes.

If memory serves, in 86 we would have become number 1 if we had beaten VA.Tech. The only other undefeated team, I believe UNC, had lost that afternoon and then we lost that evening.

Yes he did. IIRC, he didn't bash Jerry as much as he did Drew. Just tied Jerry to Fred, and insinuated that was dirty business. While he propped up Porter.

So Calkins was not the main reason - but he was one of the reasons we hired both Larry Porter and Josh Pastner. Think about that every time you listen to him, or read his stuff.

'83-84 season was when Vitale made his infamous remark. Within a couple of weeks of the remark, he came to the MSC to broadcast a home game. The student body had t-shirts printed that said "Dick Vitale Sucks!". A bit on the nose, but effective.

From what I remember there was a giant pic of his face on the front page of the CA
