5 questions for Tiger football
good article by Schad

5 Questions

Secondary is a concern for next year. Offensive and defensive line improvements are a must.

It's basketball season

I kid, but I remember seeing the opposite posts several times during football season.

RE: 5 questions for Tiger football
Question #1 is very concerning for a defense that had major issues the last couple years.

Question #5 is always hanging over our heads. It's a major problem with our football program and really all the tiger sports programs, imo. We cannot win a championship. We are not part of major college sports. We are more of a mid major type program and all that comes with that. We can't keep our coach more than a few years if he is good. Those coaches want to go where they can have a real shot at a championship.

About losing coaches, this is a potential problem with all but about ten D1 schools. Unfortunately, there aren't any Bobby Bowden's in today's coaching ranks.

RE: 5 questions for Tiger football
Had the Big 12 expanded, I think Coach Norvell might've been that type of coach. He really does love Memphis. After talking with him several times, just in the places he mentions and activities he does, it is obvious that he actually likes this city and would love to stay here. What's more important, his family does too.

Now that we are stuck in our current situation temporarily, it will take a much bigger effort to keep him and key staffers in place.

As for the other questions, it will be tough, but I think we will see improvement in the defense next season. I think our offense will be even better next season, thanks to recruiting efforts paying off and our returning starters. The West is open, but Tulsa, Houston and Navy will still be themselves. Tulane is getting better and I think SMU would be top half of the East, so it is difficult but still somewhat "open" for the taking.

History has proven that no effort is big enough to keep a coach at a G5 school when the P5 comes calling.

Yep, it will always be a problem in football. At least until the breakaway finally happens. But I think we get him for another year, unless we go undefeated and NY6 bowl. (That would be a fun debate: Would the trade-off of undefeated season and Fiesta Bowl game be worth losing the coach?) The average tenure of D1 coaches is like 3.5 years. So it's just true everywhere. I think we'll probably stay around that mean. It's actually MUCH better here than it used to be - for coaching prospects.

As far as other sports go, not sure why you think we have the same challenges of inability to win championships or keep coaches. We actually have had a good bit of stability in other sports, and are competing at high levels in some. We enter each season with the ability to win a NC in every sport except football.

By rule, you are incorrect. And I hold out hope every year. I realize we would have to enter the year as a ranked team, so we really can't compete next year, but we would have a chance in the 2018-2019 season if we can win 10 or 11 games next year.

You mean, by rule, 87 is correct?

Memphis, by, rule going 40-0 would win the NCAA BB title. Winning every baseball game would guarantee a baseball title.

Going 14-0 in football could get us a football championship, but it could also get us a Peach Bowl title, or a Birmingham bowl title.

What I'm saying is, BY RULE, we are NOT excluded from the CFP. We would have to be ranked top 4 in the CFP rankings, which is "possible."

Technically correct. You got to know it's a farce though, right? Every other sport, we play our way to a championship. Football requires winning and a committee has to agree to it. Which would mean 2 champions from the P5 would be left out.

Memphis ranked P13 in the initial release of the 2015 CFP T25 remains the highest position attained by any G5 program.

Our success is reliant on other teams we play actually being competitive...

We need the AAC to win OOC and we need to knock off at least 1 highly ranked teams OOC.

Houston had a shot this year

Would loved to have seen what Houston would have been ranked had they not lost. That would have given us all a clue as to how real our chances are.

They really didn't. If Houston were undefeated, who do you think they're replacing? 1-loss Washington, who won the P12? Media darling OSU who was up to #3? They wouldn't even be in 5th place ahead of PSU who won the B10. They might give them 6th place ahead of Michigan and Oklahoma, but I'm not even sure about that. Probably 8th place in the CFP rankings.

The SOS is where they get you. You can't get in the top 25 SOS if you're in the G5. I don't even know if you can get in the top 50. Houston was in the 70's - and that included two top 25 OOC games with Oklahoma and Loserville.

Houston may have been the only option for G5 inclusion (ever). Their OOC schedule was stacked, and their in-conference schedule wasn't too bad either. They had a stronger schedule than a lot of P5 teams.

It's going to be really difficult (nearly impossible) for a G5 to make it, unless they stack their OOC and get some help from their conference. Even then, I have my doubts that the "Bowl Committee" will give them a realistic ranking.

Major difference. Going undefeated regular season and winning conference tournament in basketball and you are guaranteed a shot at title.

Go undefeated in football and win conference title and there is no guarantee you get change at title.
