In my opinion, the opportunity to play for a berth in the access bowl is far more appealing than some minor league playoff.

Sort of like winning the NIT makes you the 65th best basketball team

RE: G5 Playoff?
They should just adopt the NCAA basketball model. Expand the playoff to 16 teams, every conference gets an auto bid, and 6 at large bids. I personally think this would cause huge fan growth in FBS, and add value to a bunch of games that are meaningless now.

They should but won't. The P5 schools want to have this advantage over the other conferences. The best we could hope for would be an 8 team playoff where all P5 schools get an automatic bid and the best G5 school gets an "at-large".

RE: G5 Playoff?
What the hell is McMurphy's problem, saying that it's unlikely for a G5 to EVER make the playoff again? Houston was ranked #6 before losing this season. If they would have decided to show up for their crap opponents, they would have clearly been in.

This is a stupid idea. I think it's wise for Aresco to continue pushing the P6 thing and hope that enough teams over perform to change the perception in our favor. Ironically, I think the American is set up for long term success due to the G5 designation. Every school in our conference, after being rejected by the P5, has started an arms race to stay ahead of the curve. All of a sudden, the AAC has become a hotbed for young coaching talent.

Let's just say our undefeated 2009 season happened again this past season (just for the sake of argument). Wouldn't the #3 ranked Bearcats be in the playoffs??

Maybe, but I think they'd be on the outside. nonconference schedule just wasn't good enough. Even one win like Houston's 2 over Louisville and Oklahoma and they may be.

I think we would definitely have been in a four team playoff that year.; we probably were only a questionable last second field goal by Texas from us being in the championship game. Now in the AAC an undefeated season won't be enough without at least one maybe two big out of conference wins.

The BE was a cartel member; the AAC isn't. I don't think it's impossible for a G5 member to make the top 4, but it is very difficult. Look at Western Michigan. Undefeated with two of the wins against P5 opponents, and still only ranked #15 in the playoff rankings. However, if Houston had run the table, you can argue that it would've been in the top 4, based on both a stronger conference schedule, and stronger P5 opponents.

Isn't the current #1-#4 chosen by a committee? If so, then no guarantee we would be included. We aren't a blue blood and if they can eliminate Penn State, they can easily disregard UC.

I think Houston would have had a real chance at making it this year if everything would have been perfect. They had a chance to beat two teams that looked like they would end up winning their P5 conference. They would have had to go undefeated though, which they obviously didn't do.

They could offer a compromise to the upper crust by giving #1-#4 a bye and letting #5-#12 play each other to match up against the #1-#4 seeds.

Just how much football are the players supposed to play? How long does football season have to last?

A regular season used to be 9 games, plus a bowl for the elite. Now it's 12 for everyone, a conference championship game for some, and a bowl game for anybody halfway decent. With a 16-team playoff in lieu of a bowl game, that equates to a 17 game season for the two national championship contestants, assuming that they were also conference championship contestants.

Just a brilliant idea for a sport with looming questions about chronic brain injuries.

I'd say model after DII and DIII, limit the season. Your questions and concerns are good; but if you want a real champion you need a true playoff.

No one does it better then the NCAA basketball tournament and everyone has a chance. Cinderella and dark horses make for great TV.

The D3 football season has been over for almost 2 weeks now, they have a 16 team playoff.
