Respectfully, could you refrain from using Appy State? And instead use App, App State, or Appalachian State. There's no "y" in anywhere in Appalachian State. It bothers some App fans more than others. To me it's not as aggregious as App-uh-LAY-shun but it's close.

Again, respectfully requesting.

Good luck to everyone in your respective bowls.

Will do on my part, FWIW. Pissed me off a while back on the Finebaum show when they kept saying Appy State and laughed about it. Y'all got a great program over there and deserve more respect than that.

Must be a regional dialect thing, but that's how I've always heard it pronounced in these parts. It was only recently (say, around the time of that awesome win over scUM in Ann Arbor) that I started hearing it as App-uh-LATCH-un.

Then again, for Oregon, the Midwesterners tend to say Or-e-GAWN, and I've now trained myself to say Or-e-GHIN like the rest of the country.

RE: Conference bowl standings
It's 100% Appa latch un.

As soon as I hear someone say Appa LAY shun I automatically assume they are some clueless yankee. My girlfriend at the time (now my wife) is from Toledo and used to say Appa Lay shun and one day proceeded to argue with me about it. I called the school and also told her that I know where I'm from and I am from the Appa latch un mountains.

Her area also called Oregon Or-e-GHAWN.

WTF?

It's the Oreghun trail not the Oreghawn trail.

Motown Bronco, right you are. It is a regional dialect thing. But we say "latch". Announcer in the Camellia bowl made it all the way to the 3 minute mark in the 4th quarter then said App-uh-LAY-shun State and I wanted to fling my remote at the TV.

Appy has always felt like calling a guy Timmy or Bobby well into his 30s. Except Appalachian State is 118.

As a guy in his 70's whose name still ends in "y", I say call people (and schools) what they want to be called. I know people named Jaime, and some pronounce it High-me, and some Jaym-ee. I was just noting the dictionary says all the alternate pronunciations are acceptable. I have little reason or opportunity to say App____ State out loud, but if if I ever do, I will try to remember your preference.

Wow, been hearing this from Yosef fans since the Herd joined the Southern Conference in 1977. Not going to change from saying Appy State, just like for old timers it remains Ohio U. for another long-time Herd rival who just wants to be "Ohio" (First, they must fix the problem with THE Ohio State U. first, which constantly is putting "Ohio" on many scarlet and gray products).

But I do agree with one thing - outside of our living space no one get Appalachian straight on pronunciations. App-uh-LAP-shun, or a-puh-LATCH-un.

NOT EVER and NO WAY, App-uh-LAY-shun is not right. Appalachian, just like the mountains, ASU, just like we all say it here in this region.

A poll on the Appalachian Trail site, however, had 53% voting for a-puh-Latch-un (which I hear more in W.Va., eastern Ky. and southern Ohio) and 47% voted for the northern App-un-LAY-shun. So this is not going away soon, either.

Recently in my office someone pointed out that I was almost certainly a native Virginian (I am) because I knew how to pronounce Appalachian. Course, the real barrier to Tidewater legitimacy is knowing how to say Norfolk (and also using Tidewater and not Hampton Roads to identify the region).
