Apparently Amazon wants to get into sports broadcasting
I remember seeing a report on this a while back.

Amazon looking to buy into sports market

Now, we've gotten a few comments from Flugaur on what he thinks will be the fallout of this. As usual, I understand not everyone puts stock into his statements, but I do find them interesting at the least.

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 17m17 minutes ago
BTM "Amazon getting into Live Sport Content, first into Professional Leagues, followed by Collegiate Sports, has already altered...."

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 16m16 minutes ago
BTM ".....has already altered the relationship between ESPN and FOX. It has brought them closer than ever before."

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 13m13 minutes ago
BTM "Amazon does not worked well with others. 3 or 4 years from now FOX, ESPN, NBC, CBS and TNT's turf will be challenged by Amazon."

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 12m12 minutes ago
BTM "Perception is Amazon's first target will eventually become a small NBA or MLB rights package".

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 10m10 minutes ago
BTM "Big Ten selling their streaming rights to Amazon before 2022/23 is legally possible, independent of established Media rights".

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 5m5 minutes ago
BTM "When it comes to Big Ten...ultimately ESPN choosed to invest in 2nd half of Big Ten Media rights not to deter FOX, but reinforce..."

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire 4m4 minutes ago
BTM "....to reinforce relationship with Big Ten and reposition itself with FOX to help maintain their market space vs new media interest"

Not familiar with Amazon. If I can watch it on my phone it'll make money. If you need a USB drive in your tv and an internet connection, then it's just more competition to service providers.

Amazon is the online retailer. They recently developed a streaming service called Amazon Prime that competes with Netflix and Hulu...services like that.

I imagine you could watch this stuff on your phone.

Prime definitely had an iPad app so I'm guessing they have phone apps (apple and android) as well.

Only a matter of time until sports content goes online in a more independent way...not tied to a cable subscription like watch ESPN

Well having a streaming service that offers ESPN is fine with me. I just don't want the production quality of the broadcasts to take a significant setback with these new providers or broadcasters

Amazon Prime is okay. It's no Netflix. But it does have a lot of old HBO and Cinemax shows. So that's kinda cool.

I doubt they would carry ESPN. They'd do the production in house and yeah, that would concern me as far as production quality too.

If they start getting into college sports, I could see them picking up the Mountain West or the American. Good coverage throughout the country, good entry point and both of those conferences come up for renegotiation soon. ESPN will not ante up for either conference (most likely).

Heard something on the radio, not sure if serious or just speculation: Disney might consider selling EEPN due to declining profits and declining subscribers.

Depending on the package you choose, they have all four ESPN networks and FS1 and FS2 as well. Also comes with the BTN, SECN, the NFL Network. You can add NFL Redzone for $39.95 for the whole season. I currently pay $13.00 per month for my DISH Multi-sport pack to get Redzone. Premium movie channel packages are also available for a great price. My DISH contract ends in 10 months. It is PlayStation Vue after that. All I need as a sports nut, for $34.99 a month. You can stream five TVs simultaneously. All you need is a ROKU stick plugged into your TV's USB port, or HDMI slot. ROKU has hundreds of free channels as well. Chromecast and other streaming devices are also available at any store.

I could see the Big 12 latching onto Amazon as well. The Big 12 needs coverage, Amazon needs a conference. Amazon easily gets into the P5.

In 7 years the Big 12 will go away. It's more likely we will see the Arizona schools combine with the Oklahoma and Texas schools.

I doubt it though. I really doubt that the Big 12 will be going away because as bad as the other conferences want it to go away, they would have to make too many sacrifices to make it happen. The Pac 12 can forget about getting Texas without Oklahoma. Also, Southern Cal was the one who wanted the Arizona schools to begin with. Guess who's in the Arizona's schools division? Try Southern Cal. So, your Arizona schools combining with the Texas & Oklahoma schools is also a non-starter. Either the Pac12 is going to have swallow a lot of academic pride and let Oklahoma and at least Oklahoma State in, if not Texas Tech too. (Texas Tech may be optional though, so the Pac12 might have some wiggle room but not much.) or if Texas goes to the ACC "Notre Dame" style (kinda outlandish, but possible), the Big Ten might make a play for Oklahoma, but they've got to take Oklahoma State too. Would they be too proud to take in the Cowboys??? Would they be willing to expand to 16 teams??? I'm thinking the answer to all of these questions is "no."

AAC will get a big raise from Amazon for their Next TV Deal and probably be around 10 to 12 MM per team which is a good start ....

RE: Apparently Amazon wants to get into sports broadcasting
It sets up a fascinating confrontation, but not with FOX or ESPN. It sets up the confrontation between the advertising opportunities live sports provide and the changing choices of Millennials. Somewhere at that intersection point is the future of our payouts. Live sports advertising and more interested broadcasters will drive that number up (so perhaps we have not yet peaked in revenue) and on the other hand the death of Boomers and the aging of X'ers will leave the market weighted more heavily toward Millennials which will drive the that number down.

JRsec has a valid point..But Twitter is already working with the NFL and its not hurting one bit..Amazon has been talking with Aresco and AAC for awhile and ready to make a Huge play on their New contract and could pay between 10 to 12 MM per team...Not sure how it will all work out, but the Cable bubble is on the verge of busting as Subcriptions for Espn are continue going downward...Next Few years will tell the tell i would suppose...If Amazon takes on the new AAC as a Guinea Pig and is a Huge hit as they think it will be, then it could open the door to bigger things to come...What do you think on that JRsec...Just hard to tell how it will all go...

We'll see. It could play out as you believe, or those with the money and political clout to protect existing industries could slow things down, or ESPN could move more fully in that direction. They did buy the streaming service that MLB uses.
