We should be dropping like a rock in a pond soon. There were maybe 30k in the stands on Saturday...when the game started.

5 of the 11 P5's under 40k are ACC, 2 are Big 10 2 are PAC 12, 1 is SEC and 1 is Big 12. For all the doom and gloom about the big 12, their fans still show up to the games. Even if OU and Texas left the Big 12, they would still have better attendance than the ACC. Significantly better. It goes back to the flagship school thing IMHO. State identity typically trumps city identity in college football, I don't know how that ever changes.
Cheers!

But, but, but these schools are BIG TIME. Sooo much better than every single AAC team due to their POWER label. Every one of these programs has earned a spot at the power table.

Its pretty simple---the more small privates you have the bigger the drag on the conference wide attendance average. There are exceptions, but for the most part, all else being equal, conferences built around large state supported public schools are going to have an easier time driving their conference attendance averages.

I agree with this in principle...that said:

G5 conferences, private school members:

AAC - 3 (and Navy which of course is not a private school but isn't a traditional state supported public school either)
MWC - 0 (but Air Force is similar to Navy)
CUSA - 1
Sun Belt - 0
MAC - 0

Yeah Miami (FL) and Notre Dame are the only smallish private schools in the top 30 in attendance in 2016 to date.

BYU and USC are in there as well, but they aren't exactly small. BYU has over 26,000 undergrads and USC has over 18,000. USC has another 20k plus in graduate or professional students.
