I suppose I'd choose a classic 'statesman' president in the mold of Washington if given the choice of all them, but I'd go with Cleveland as my wild card.

I can't see how the first one would not still be good choice. Washington was an incredible human being.

Question: Would all past POTUSes be modernized and familiar with the complexities of 21 century politics? It would be interesting seeing how a man like George Washington would behave in our time

Calvin Coolidge. Imagine the havoc that a tight-lipped president would wreak in the sensationalist media circles. "He's ignoring us! That means he must be evil!"

Seriously though, a bit of verbal restraint and a leaning towards laissez-faire economics might have done the trick this election cycle. If someone Coolidge-esque had risen this century, I would have voted for him/her. The Coolidge biography by Amity Shlaes is the best one IMO. Having a Henry Cabot Lodge & a Andrew Mellon to bounce ideas off of would be great too.

It would be a good time for George HW Bush. We need someone to rebuild relationships with our friends and not give in to our enemies or make them worse enemies. And someone who as former head of the CIA understands how to keep secrets and the threats to our nation.

He was also the last president who could work with both members of his own party and members on the other side. Reagan could do that. Carter couldn't even work with his own side.

We could also use a kinder, gentler America.

FWIW, given the international dislike and an increasing domestic leaning towards "us against ourselves and the world"...

the kind, gentle America is never coming back. The war machine is awake and angry

George Washington. The best American that has lived and ever will live.

Plus, he would get us out of NATO and UN.
