RE: Official Memphis Vs. Navy Game Thread
Not the worst game against the option we has on this week. In 1974 Rockey Felker used the triple option to drive 99 yards in the final minutes of the game to defeat the Tigers.

Yep, good to see the fight. We just need an intelligent scheme to fight with, come on coaches.......

Surely you jest. We had a better athlete at probably 18-19 of 22 starters.
Yeah. Athletes are NOT the problem. Our defensive scheme and instruction is the problem. On that 3rd and 1 for Navy at the goal line, we waited.... WAITED ...to tackle "whoever was coming through the line with the ball." You have to push THEM back.
I am sure that talent has something to do with it and that the scheme had something to do with it (our defensive failure). It will be nice to play them next near when we (I hope) will have the same coaches and will be able to apply what we learned this year. We got very little carryover from last year with our HC and whole defensive staff being different.
Regarding the holding, I must admit that I didn't see the holding. I am not saying that it wasn't happening, but I didn't see it in the normal course of watching the game. I need to go back and check it out. I did see the poor ball spots and there were numerous times that they got between a half and full yard advantage. Also, didn't notice the chop-blocks - gotta go check that out too.
I am not going to pin this one on the refs, though. We just didn't make the plays when we needed to. Early in the game, we were running with relative ease and then tried to pass too much - too much for the weather we were playing in. That series in the first half when we had 1st and goal from the 3-4 yard line was killer. Again, we were running with ease - just smash it in there. Instead we float one to the flat and we try twice from the 1 from a shotgun formation. Their D line was not overwhelming. Load up the backfield and shove it in there!
Tulsa will be pretty tough and looks like we will be without Shareef White for a while.
5-2, baby! Go Tigers!
Hamstring injuries usually don't respond well to attempted quick recovery. He probably attempted to come back to soon. As for Tulsa, amazing the difference in attempting to defend the triple option & then the next week, Tulsa's air raid style.

RE: Official Memphis Vs. Navy Game Thread
A little off subject-KY has stolen our unis this time; a little different version but our combo. Game on SEC Network.
I saw a lot of hold/chop blocks/ blocks in the back and missed spots of the ball ALWAYS in Navy's favor. Taking patriotism too far. Once on a long gain to our 8 yard line or so, Navy OL just put his arm around our OL linemen's neck; it was in the open and resulted in about 15 yard gain maybe. Maybe not difference in game but if each if those had been called or in our favor, who knows?

True.
You have to teach young players about not quitting, and this was one of our better games in terms of penalties the past few years. Games that we lost, at least.

Ferguson is going to have to get way more accurate. That four and out at the goal line also involved some poor decision making. We are in desperate need for some lineman on booth sides of the ball. I feel bad for Pennington.

I don't agree with nascar often but they were holding on most every play and yet it was never called once.
They had their arms wrapped around us and had a handful of the back of the jersey on more than occasion including the very first touchdown they scored.

40 mins...ug. They are pretty beat up, I'm thinking. Did we lose any this week?
I confess to thinking non-football thoughts ....like, just let them score fast this time.

Yep, the four and out on the goal line, should have been four smash mouth up the gut plays, didn't understand the floater pass, lucky that wasn't picked.. I guess navy just has tougher players than we do.

Didn't Navy beat (Houston)the number 11 team in country by 6. You guys sound like a bunch of loosers yourself.Am I disappointed. Sure I am. Could we have played better yes. But to sit here and complain like we're worthless is pathetic. If you think you can coach better which a lot of you on here think you can. Go apply for a position on the coaching staff.
Hold on there sparky. I'm not complaining that we are worthless. I said we need to scheme better. I actually said we have the superior athletes. Simmer your turbo jets.

Today wasn't a total loss for Tiger fans. At least Houston, Arkansas, and Ole Miss lost too.

I wonder how many yards Fournette would have gained on us yesterday?
The issues are still the issues. Linemen. Hope to see improvement there.

But we have to learn how to defend the triple option. We're still reading & then reacting, so we're always late. Everywhere the triple option is defended well, its shoot the gaps, hit the QB every play & contain the corners with man to man on the receivers. And the frustrating thing is that we have the speed at LB to make it work very well.

And the defensive backs have to be ready for the pass, too. We aren't always ready. I think if we saw the triple option offense more often, we'd be better at defending it. Personally, I enjoy watching it executed well. Just not against the Tigers.

New coach, new quarterback, new scheme, improved defense in spite of yesterday's performance. We've got a good team.

It sucked to drop that one, but if we can win out, maybe Navy will drop two.

I went back and re-watched some of the game, watching the action frame-by-frame. On many of Navy's successful QB runs, our OLB collapsed in on the FB dive when we already had it covered somewhat by someone else. This appeared to leave the pitch defender on the edge against the QB and the pitch man and we had no chance
WHAT IS HOLDING? Is it legal (or acceptable) for the blocker to grab the defenders shoulder pads, as long as you are doing do directly in front of you. This appeared to be the case yesterday, as well as in the Auburn game last year, especially with WRs blocking our DBs. Is this something that we take advantage of also?
