Pastner was not the coach for a program of Memphis caliber after the brand and strong program built by Cal. However you feel about him, when he left:
we were sold out, in a position to recruit most top players regardless of location due to our brand and going to a Tiger BB games was the "thing" to do. We didn't advertise or runs specials on tickets. Granted, he left us a short roster but with a great chance to suceeed with the right coach.
Well, coming up on 8 years later, we will be lucky to draw 1/3 of 2010, our roster is chock full of walk ons and NON HIGH D1 players and apathy is as bad as since Tic Price era.
We hired a very good coach (at $3M a year)who has had many good years in a great career but is he ready to take on a monumental player and fan rebuilding job? I'm not convinced he is but hope I'm wrong.
Memphis supports a winner. It's that simple. If Tubby turns it around you'll see sell outs. The fans won't care if the recruits are 5 stars or 2.
A lot of truth to that except for high donor boosters. Turnaround time to get them back on bandwagon is longer.
People on this board are different than most around here. We are Memphis fans and most of us have been football/basketball season ticket holders for years. We've seen the great years and a lot of awful years. The average fan only cares if we win. They won't buy tickets unless we win. Memphis has a ton of fair weather fans. Calipari only sold out the forum when he started winning big. If Tubby turns it around, the crowds will be there.
Whenever I have mentioned the word "fair weather fans", which Memphians are literally and figuratively, I have been bashed into oblivion. Except for the 20,000 Tiger Faithful football fans and the few thousand Tiger core bb fans, the rest of this town only runs to fires, disasters and winners.
Now, don't get me wrong ~ Memphians are the best folks in the world, friendly and would give you the shirt off their back, and don't take kindly to being put down or fooled, but that is the way they are sportswise.

Tigers have 8-10K hardcore BB fans if you look back at out lowest attendance during worst years. Pastner situation ran some of hard core away and we dropped to 8K last year with approx 10K season ticket equivalents sold. So better BB core than FB. Always thought our FB core was 12-14K.

Coach Calipari for awhile tried to sell out the upper level seats by having Best Buy give away big screen TV's. Does anybody recall exactly what seasons this happened? Did he do this during that successful run of Elite 8's and Final Four?

Cal wasn't around at giveaway; it was done at halftime wasn't it? Seats were basically sold out except for upper corners. My recollection was that it was a marketing gimmick to make upper level feel "involved ".

Or maybe it's finally getting to the truth?
This is just the tip of the iceberg
Gotta get your P's and Q's straight there, pally. We need to get to the bottom of the low down, dirty dealing that caused us to be left out of the Big XII even though we had an 18-month old agreement that we were in. On the other hand, stuff done by a guy who was the Tigers' head basketball coach for 7 years is no longer relevant. Try to keep up.
It could be argued that 7 years of irrelevancy and disorganization damaged the brand. It's easy for fans to think of things in terms of historical context, but the nation and recruits have a relatively short frame of reference on which to infer what a given brand means to them personally.
He was our coach last year. It's not like we are in year 3 of a new coach talking about the old coach.

I have no idea why it was done, just know it was being done for sure the year Reke was here.
Marc and bluto said it best. Let's be happy the loon is gone and move on. Guarantee you that all kinds of this stuff will creep out over time. The guy was one bizarre dude.

To this day, I like Cal and loved what he did for our program. We were a national brand and a fixture on TV...and we WON big games on TV.
That said, every year that goes by, college bb gets more and more irrelevant and nobody can deny that. Throw in the fact that the Grizz are a pretty solid team and it's no surprise that ticket sales are way down.
I am not sure about the hire of Tubby either, but I do know that we were blessed to have Georgia Tech hire Josh away. What they were thinking is probably 'hey, we've got all sorts of talent in Atlanta and this guy can recruit on the local level.' Man, Tech is in for a surprise.

Cal did a lot of good stuff for the community that people don't know about
His first year here he and Barbee would go to this soul food joint at Springdale and Brown in the Klondyke neighborhood and take Tiger tshirts and give them away. He did that in other inner city areas as well. He left close to campus so the players could have access to him 24/7. They were always welcome to come over to his house to swim or shoot hoops or just talk. I heard he invited Joey Dorsey to stay the weekend with him just to prove that he wasn't a bad guy because he yelled at him in practice.
On the other hand Josh lived way out at Southwind and pretty much never had his players over. Players want someone who they know how they stand with as coach. They knew how they stood with Cal. I'm betting they'll know how they stand with Tubby. They had no clue with Josh.
That's a fact. I've heard it from too many people close to the program. That and his micromanaging were and always will be why he won't be a big success as a coach

When Josh's house was for sale, I guessed that Josh didn't have the players out to his house but was corrected by several.

I thought it was pretty "goofy" when josh was getting on and suspending players for use of curse words and then gets rick ross to sing a curse word-filled rap song in the fed ex forum about white prostitutes for sale as well as drug sales of cocaine, crack and heroin. Also, at that time, rick ross was being called out by other rappers due to lyrics in a song about drugging women for sex. I pointed out this double standard on this board and posts got deleted.
I thought Rick Ross never showed up. Diverted his flight due to medical issues and canceled. They had Yo Gotti fill in.

He didn't for a long time. George Klein and a few others advised him to get players over there on occasion
I tend to be optimistic about my sports teams. During his tenure, I kept right on hoping that Pastner would figure out this coaching thing. We took a gamble, he was young, All that stuff. Then finally came the instance that he blamed a football player (craft) that had just joined the team for a loss. I wish I could find the sound bite. Craft had just been thrust into playing after missing competitive basketball a couple seasons. Pastner clearly had no idea what to do. So, let's try the new guy. I know Craft was a solid prospect at HS level but I mean, c'mon...
I've waited months to express my disgust. I feel better
