RE: ***Hate Week Pt. 1: UCF @ ECU Game Thread ***
This is not an overstatement, this game is make or break for Mo and especially for Compher. Compher risked his entire career on this move. His contract is running out and he has a new boss so this better work and better work this year. Ruff wasn't fired because he had torn the program to the ground and had zero talent, he was fired because he had talent and found creative ways to lose with it. ECU will not be favored in the next 3 games after this one, which are @USF, Navy on a short week, and then @Cincy. Lose this game and ECU very well could be staring a 6 game losing streak in the face. ECU misses a bowl this year and Compher is gonna get canned, hell he may get canned anyway but miss a bowl and it's for sure happening. That then puts Mo immediately on the hot seat with his boss gone and the fan base very much against him. I like Mo, I want this to work, but lose this game and he's not long for this job.

That's a great confidence boost for any coach. "Hey I know you're only at game 5 of your first season here and still trying to get the p,a years to play your style and to recruit players for said style, but you have to win or you'll be canned at season's end. Why not give the guy time to rebuild around his style. Sure he has talent but that talent was recruited for a different style of play. And pretty sure we can win at least three of the next 4 if we get past the past two weeks. Dropping one to USF or Cincy won't surprise me but not both.

Not really. We all know the gamble Compher took when he fired Ruff. Let's not pretend that was a universally accepted decision among even the fan base much less the college football world at large. Compher has a new boss, and new bosses even under the best of circumstances like to hire "their guys." I think Compher has like 1 more year on his deal after this year, so it's getting close to crap or get off the pot time. How this season goes is gonna determine whether Compher is here going forward. I'd say even if the season goes well we could go in a different direction, but if it goes poorly he's gonna be gone. If Compher is gone Mo is immediately on the hot seat for the same reasons Compher is, new guys want to hire their own guys. ECU has a really tough stretch after this week. We will be dogs @USF, probably dogs at home on a short week against Navy, and we will be dogs @Cincy. If ECU isn't good enough to beat a team at home with a first year coaching staff also coming off an 0-12 season then realistically they are probably losing those 3 also. What do you think it looks like around here if we are on a 6 game losing streak? This is not being over dramatic this is just playing things out to their logical conclusions.

Mo's not getting canned after this year even if we lose out, but his boss will which puts him instantly on the hot seat. In a perfect world he should get a few years to get his players and put his system fully in, but this isn't a perfect world. Compher made a decision, that while I agreed with at the time, was divisive and he made bold proclamations about winning championships. I liked it, it was a big swing, but when you take a swing like that it has to work or you're through. The jury is very much out right now on Mo. He's looked the part and talked the part, and the first 2 games they played the part, but the last 2 they have not at all. This game is make or break for the rest of the season. Lose it and I don't see 4 more wins out there.

We had to hit rock bottom to get rid of GOL. If he had won just 3 games we would still have him as our coach. His personally and style was not conducive to attracting the best recruits for our program and the fans pretty much hated him. But even before we hit rock bottom we did quite well with several AAC championships and CUSA championships. Hopefully, Frost will take us to higher highs without the lows.

Interesting stat: Every year UCF has beaten ECU, they've won their division (or in the case of 2 years ago, without a division, they won the conference).

ECU really gets up for UCF and usually plays well against us. I hope we can keep this trend going by beating ECU. Most likely it will not be easy.

Unfortunately I think the only way to keep the streak going is if we lose to ECU :)

UCF is surprisingly good this year, but I can't see them winning the division this year.

No we won't win the division this year, but bowl eligibility may be a possibility.

We didn't have a down year last year, we just took the year off to give the other teams hope. 04-cheers

I'm certainly going to be interested in this game and see how our team reacts after that huge loss to VT. Losing McGill doesn't really help either so I think we will learn a lot about both teams during this game. From an ECU prospective I think this game is a must win if we want to go bowling this year.

Lose this game and I just don't see a realistic path to a bowl. On paper this and SMU at home are probably the only 2 games remaining on the schedule we're gonna for sure be favored in. Looking at the schedule after this week it's

@USF-probably a TD underdog maybe even bigger
Navy on a short week-probably between 4-7 point underdogs
@Cincy-probably around a TD underdog
UCONN-gonna depend on record but pretty close to a pick em
@Tulsa-if I had to guess right now probably a slight underdog
SMU-only game I can say for certain we'll be favored
@Temple-probably a slight underdog

Not that any game on that schedule is unwinnable, but lose to UCF at home and I can't look at that schedule and tell you there are 4 sure wins on it. This is not a shot at UCF but with it being a home game it's certainly one of the 2 or 3 "easiest" games we have left. Lose it and there's a pretty darn good shot we could be 2-6 going into the game against UCONN.
