No but it's interesting when people claim to be from a city when they are actually from a different one.

You meet someone who's all snooty about what a sh!thole Memphis is because they live in Nashville--only to find out they live in Lavergne. Pfft.

There are many people on this board who make it a point to tell folks "that's why I left Memphis" to move to Germantown, Collierville, Arlington, Bartlett. Granted, no one would likley choose to move from Memphis to Millington, but the point remains that those cities aren't Memphis, and you can't say you're FROM Memphis when you aren't? Right. Certainly can't pick and choose.

Dude is a fantastic ambassador for the 901. I have a pretty good feeling where his heart is.

I think you clowns that live outside the 240 loop aren't true Memphians either

I live in Fayette County and have a 901 Area Code. I am "from" Memphis, since I grew up there.

Someone who just moved to Memphis has the same claim. Makes no difference to me.

You sound like the zealots who got pissy when Austin Nichols was announced as being from Collierville.

I ain't gonna lose any sleep if someone who lives in Poplar Estates tells people they are from Memphis.

Yeah I grew up in Fayette but I'm a Memphian whether you like it or not. Haven't lived anywhere but Memphis since I was 18.

It's about your identity and what you claim.

We like a guy who's from Brownsville and say he's basically a Memphian.

Some turdball lives a block East of Poplar/Kirby and he is "NOT" from Memphis.

Gotta love it. People telling other people where they should live. I'm a Memphian, have been all my life, love the city, love the University, good friends with Jim Strickland, so I guess I should never move. Had a great deal on a house in Germantown, bought it and moved there, plus made some $$$$ on selling my former house, guess that makes me a sellout and a traitor. Wow, some of the bullshat on this board never ceases to amaze me. Oh by the way, just to make some of you numbskulls feel better, I'm still in the 901 area code.

To each his own I guess. Some of the Grizzlies live in Southwind. I imagine most say they live in Memphis. I guess some say they live in Southwind. Some might say Germantown. As HoopDreams likes to say...sometimes everything isn't black and white.

PS
I see your other point on the hypocrisy of some, but Brownsville seems like a stretch. Not sure if that was hyperbole or not.

This kinda reminds me of the Midtown discussion we had a while back. Ask six people and you'll get six different answers.

I'm not telling you crap. More importantly, just read what I wrote.

However, when I lived out of town and happened to meet some folks who tell me there's another guy at my work who is from Memphis and tells folks "how it is" in Memphis and I meet him, and I say, "hey, I'm from Memphis. I used to live near the UofM, how about you?" and he replies, "well, I mean, I lived in Millington..."

I see your point about the same folks bashing Memphis not really living IN Memphis. I try to talk about the positives of the city as much as possible. Even though I grew up in the 'burbs, I think its ok to say you're from Memphis, but on the other hand, that same person shouldn't be talking bad about the city. I think I should've read your post a little closer before I weighed in. My apologies. I'm still "from Memphis" in my mind doe...

RE: Off topic- so JT really has moved to middle Tennessee
The more people who love Memphis live elsewhere, the more those folks can (hopefully) fight the false stereotypes of Memphis. I hope to return permanently, by that I mean reverse the amount of time I live in different places, with Memphis getting the most time. Until then, everyone I meet will know that I will promote its potential and progress. I tell em Memphis is the friend who'll buy you a beer even though he had a $hittier day than you.

That said, I think Timberlake is just a casual fan of Memphis. Nothing wrong with it. He capitalizes on the brand and soul of Memphis and feeds it into his businesses, crediting Memphis in the process. Nothing wrong with it.

But he isn't Kimbal Musk. Heck, he isnt even Drew Holcomb. He isnt trying to make a lasting difference in Memphis. Doesnt make him a bad guy. Just dont make him out to be more than he is. And promote more local artists to have those bonds. There are many adopted Memphians who do more than he, there are many expats that do more than he, but appreciate all positivity, and encourage all expats to advocate for their hometown and dont ostracize them in some "RINO"-like purge. Dont become fundamentalist.

Memphis should be beyond that now. Our unemployment rate is low. Almost every hospital is expanding. The city and its assets have received several rankings and awards that no other community in Tennessee has, including best marina in the world, top 3 most desirable employer by millenials, only city in top 3 of two different rankings of generous cities, and so on. The relationship between bridge seeking (not wall building) faiths has been noted nationally (and locally). We have the best bbq, fried chicken, hamburger, donuts, and cupcake/desserts in the country as well as ranked farmers markets and expanding health food and recreation scene. Our region's governments unanimously agreed on something (the Greenprint). Our quality of life has never been better. We're going in the right direction. We can still use all the grinders and believers we can get. Share that.

And help the region keep improving. We still have much work to do, so dont get complacent. If we do that, and do so with our trademark hospitality and authenticity, Timberlake's decision will be drowned out by other more substantive opportunities.
