Also, the Big 12 is absolutely retarded for not taking Louisville when they had the chance.

Rather than what if, it ought to provide motivation.......

The motivation has to be to build a 40-45k seat on-campus stadium. If we don't, we'll never make enough at the gate to make football profitable.

Yep.

Don't know how long we have known this. Too bad people keep trying to make the LB the go to.

If you want to keep the LB, do one of two things:

1) Chairback the entire m'effer, hopefully that reduces the capacity to the 45k level.

2) Tear out an entire end zone of seats and make it something else. I'm not sure how that could be done...sort of like the right field stuff at Autozone park. Like a picnic area for groups. Or some kids roaming area.

Bottom line is the stadium to just too large. Nothing embarrassing about getting 40k a game.

By my best count, last year 69 D1 schools averaged fewer than 40,000 people a game.

The problem is what's good for the university is not good for the bowl game.

When I watch Louisville play I think of all of the players they have that were kicked out of other schools, I think of a coach who walked out on an NFL team during the season and Harley-Davidsons come to mind.

Ha. Also think how Memphis is considered a "thug" university even though both of their coach's are the lowest forms of people possible.

For many years the city & university have had divergent interests, yet our university continues to defer to the city & state politicians - and it's always city interests where some private parties benefit rather than the city or our university. If the city were truly interested in the best for the city, the city government would be pushing hard for our university to build its own OC facilities for FB now & BB in the near future. This would add substantial property tax base resulting from surrounding private development, would add private sector jobs & would grow university support at the same time. And it would show the college presidents & sports leadership around the country that our university means to make its mark by the investment & achievements of our university.

RE: Everytime I watch Louisville play
Yep, u follow Howards blue print at Miami and Lewisville, he played he toughest schedule he could possibly play and recruited his schedule and then he started beating these teams, followed by the big conferences wanting his teams. Be bold pay our new coach and staff and play schools in the major conferences and see how it plays out. Charley Bailey and Chuck Stobart had the right idea. Plus Ripp, who played Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mosourri and the only coach to beat utk. Tommy West took over Ripp recruits including Wimprine and DeAngelo in the pipeline. Then he proceeded to water down the schedule and here we r. Let's get this done

What if we had made the same forward thinking investments they did?

What if we had hired a President like Dr Rudd who values college athletics as the front door of the university, as opposed to a stick in the mud like Shirley Raines?

What if we had hired an AD the caliber of Tom Jurich or Tom Bowen back 20 years ago?

What if we had made a run at a quality football coach?

It all starts with vision and leadership, and while we have it in place now... boy wouldn't it have been nice to leaders with vision back in the mid 90's.

I too remember the days when Memphis would schedule Louisville as one of its filler guaranteed win games. When Louisville coach Lee Corso was waving the white flag with Memphis up 69-0. But, Louisville really gained momentum with the Louisville AD, Tom Jurich. But even before, UK didn't prevent Louisville from having its own med school & that helped Louisville gain academic credibility. Then the OCS & other substantial facilities investments.

And all the while our university has thought small, capitulated to short-sighted state & city interests & we continue to fret & wallow in mediocrity. Even now with all the improvements (and they are major for our university), we are still thinking small. And the city & state continue to miss that that a strong University of Memphis is directly beneficial to city, state & region. Our university should have ownership of the UT-Med School @ Memphis, we should have an OCS & OCA - and it would directly benefit the university (obviously) but more importantly the city (property tax base for surrounding private investment & tourism) & the state. And grow the region. Ironically, a strong P-5 University of Memphis with a strong research endowment would over time be more economically beneficial to the states of MS & AR respectively than OM & UA, in addition to the strength it would bring west TN.

NO vision & short-sighted politicians who look to personal gain & control rather than an independent, strong & prosperous University of Memphis to fuel the economy of the region.

Well, at least NOW we have a Mayor that loves the University and, hopefully, understands that making the UofM stronger is one of the best ways to enhance the City, as a whole. I don't know the details of our current lease agreement, but I wonder how that might be able to be improved to allow the stadium to be a source of revenue for the Univ without taking on too much of the potential burden from the City. I know where the Mayor tailgates - I may need to take this up with him this Sat. 04-cheers

Memphis aint the only school that louisville jumped ahead off. There are many, many others. Anyway, the Tigers could compete with them on the field right now. They just happened to get the P5 invite.

Oh and for the Jurich did everything crowd :

Schnellenberger's lasting legacy at U of L however, is Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, which he proposed from the minute he arrived. Schnellenberger planned and raised the money for its construction, but left for Oklahoma before the stadium opened. In 2006, Louisville named the Cardinals' football fieldhouse the Howard L. Schnellenberger Football Complex with Schnellenberger in attendance before U of L's game against Florida Atlantic University.[10] The most valuable player award for the UofL and UK is also named after him because he was born and raised in Louisville and he played college at Kentucky.

Then the next year he went 2-9, then 5-6. He didn't keep the momentum.

The next seven seasons (combined Howard and Ron Cooper) UofL went 35-43.

Then John L. Smith was hired. 5 straight winning records. 5 straight bowl games. 62-41 record. Then Pitrino.

Hell, UCF won a real BCS Bowl a few years ago. How has that worked out for them.

He coached in a modified minor league beisbol park and took them to 2 one big bowl and one decent one. Beat Alabama and Michigan St. He sucked so bad that Oklahoma hired him.

My point is everyone thinks it's all on the AD and it's not. A good football coach who can sell his program to the community is a must. We never had that here after Rex. Stobart had a couple of good years but had the personality of a door knob.

I'm willing to bet the 1990 season got the ball rolling for the facilities improvements at the UofL

How ever it got rolling, rolling it did & it is still ascending........our university & its leadership has to think bigger than big to even give it a chance to happen. And for some reasons, our university never thinks really big.
