RE: With Just A Few Tweeks...
Wasn't there a piece of property considered for an off campus football stadium before the new athletic center at KBS was built? Where was that or am I mis-remembering?

I think I heard something about that also, and I think it was the piece of property we're talking about, but it was just a rumor.

Appman,

Do they want to move the baseball stadium? I could eventually see a public/private partnership with Don Beaver for a combo stadium with an Appalachian League team in the summer. Either way, the old WHS property could solve a ton of facilities issues.

Beaver Field will stay where it is. The softball field will probably be moved to the WHS site. The desire is to expand the indoor practice facility over that area. Interestngly enough Beaver tried to work out just such a deal with App about 10 years ago. He wanted to move his rookie summer league team there and was willing to build a 2500 seat stadium with pro lighting and clubhouse. All the school had to do was provide the land and let them sell beer during their games. The BOT, Borkowski and or Laney said no.

I figured it would be a tough sell to move baseball to the WHS site, but when I saw your post reference baseball fields, I started to think of that as a possibility. Hope it happens sooner rather than later.

I apologize, didn't mean to mislead you. The baseball site would be perfect for a new softball stadium. The WHS softball site is a little crampted for a clubhouse and indoor hitting/pictching facility. You can pull it up on Google Earth and get a good look at the infastructure still in place.

Peacock wanted to build a game day only football stadium on the Edminstien property. He wanted to tear down the existing West Side upper deck, keep the lower levels and encircle the stadium with dorms. Replace Owens and use the field as a practice facility. Obviously continuing to use the track. The Edminstein property would have been a spectacular setting for the stadium. He got pushback from two groups of people. Those living near the site, which is hard to understand why they wouldn't put up with 6 Saturday's a year, but no issues with 9 months of high school traffic and noise. Those who thought it would be more difficult for students to get to games. Although a big majority of students live off campus. There was also the little issue of a $75 million price tag. He had talked to the NCDOT anout reworking the roads connecting to 421 and discussed building a connector road from 321 to the backside of the stadium from State Farm which is just on the backside of the property. It was an ambitious plan, but I loved his outside the box thinking.

The two most important are rock and numerous underground springs. The lower half of the east stands is in terrible shape. Literally disintegrating with each passing year. I've talked to Doug Gillin about filling in those with gravel and paving over them then extending the upper level down to the field. At the same angle they would land right about where the inside edge of the track is. Move the field over towards the West (pressbox) side and wrap the endzones with the same seating as the East and you've got yourself a compact little stadium that would seat about 35K. It is by far the least expensive option and I don't care if they would be all metal. You can't tell the difference with people in the seats.

This sounds very similar to our situation when we expanded. Everyone wanted to dig down and lower the field, but Spring Lake is only about 1,000 feet away from our stadium. Spring Lake has about 200 freshwater springs that are the source of the San Marcos River. Digging down wasn't an option as the depth of the water table wouldn't allow it.

When we expanded the North Endzone seating we also removed the track. The North Endzone seating is very close to the field of play. The East and West side stands are no closer than they were pre-expansion as they were in place prior to removing the track. It does look a hell of a lot better without the track though.

This rumour has been around longer than the rumor of App moving to the Sun Belt.
