Because its a work in progress. The AAC used a different criteria in realignment than the NBE did in selecting programs. It was never expected we'd be starting off on equal footing. We needed to fire underperforming coaches at UCF, UH, Tulane, etc, first.

The Big East is and will be for the vast majority of years, a better basketball conference than the AAC. "Underperforming coaches" is one of a handful of major issues at a number of schools in this conference.

The point is that it is a trade off we made in targeting specific institutions. None of the NBE schools play fbs football. Their fanbases sole focus is one major athletics season per year, excluding football.
Knowing that, the AAC charted a path to create a culture where basketball is given greater emphasis at schools that hadn't poured enough resources into that one jar in the past.
It takes time. If you want to be in a healthy All-Sports conference, it takes time. The coaching component is obviously one of the first matters to be dealt with if you are going to install a successful culture.
When the Big East was formed, it took awhile for UConn to construct a nationally competitive basketball culture. However, it was able to with the support of the conference.
Now its UConn's football that needs help, and the upper-tier AAC fb programs have given the Huskies a structure of support to improve in that sport.
If UConn would rather put all of their marbles in the hoops basket, there is still time. If other programs (sans ECU) weren't taking steps to make this more than the 4 bid conference that it was last year, you may have a beef.
However, to piss and moan because the maturation process doesn't yield the NBEs 5 or so bids instead, is petty and shortsighted.
How long would it take the NBE to create a nationally competitive fbs football conference is perhaps what you should be asking. Then go over to the Holyland of Hoops and gripe that they don't offer UConn anyplace to support your fledgling football program.

UConn does as much for the football programs in-conference through exposure and brand association as the conference does for UConn. The American is a fine football set-up for UConn (lord knows they haven't done anything noteworthy since Edsall was in town), but there's a reason the Group A/Group B language in the ESPN contract is written the way it is.

It's more a question of whether AAC full membership vs. NBE for non-football and some sort of affiliation with the MW for football is most beneficial to the university. The latter is currently more of a pain, but if the American loses members to realignment the equation can change based on who goes versus who comes in.

That's ok. We have the #2 player in Texas this weekend on an official visit. 247 is starting to predict he commits to us. If Oregon gets a commitment from the Guard they have on campus, watch out. Could be a 4-star to Tulsa.

David Nickelberry coming in for a visit this weekend. Some think he might commit then as well, we shall see. Hope we can land him.

Here are the rankings of the Rivals #150 since 2015 by school. Again, this is just the Rivals.com rankings.
2015-
UConn- #23, #58
UC- #99, #119
Memphis- #33, #54
SMU- #66, #128
Temple #111, #127

2016-
UConn- #34, #47, #80, #133, #145
UC- #61
Temple- #140

2017-
UConn- #38
Temple #148

2017 Updated AAC
UConn- #38
Memphis- #111, #140
Temple- #148

From a Temple standpoint, they are still in on #144. #23 Quade Green has Temple is his Final 10 but I give Temple less than a 1% chance of getting him.
I expect another commit for Temple coming soon from a #150-#200 type player.

While we're on the topic of AAC BB - add VCU & WSU NOW! It's a no-brainer. And it would help recruiting throughout the AAC for BB if the conference is perceived as a top BB conference.

I agree!

Here's Mike Aresco's comments this past week on AAC basketball.

He seems to have something up his sleeve (this was in an article talking about a possible Big 12 raid)

Quote: “We have a strategic plan prepared, we are holding off on it but we have that good plan we will unveil at some point We have been doing a lot of other work scheduling, we have been doing a lot of work on basketball. We started to come back in (men’s) basketball and this year we could easily have six or seven teams in the NCAA tournament. Should we lose schools, we have thought a lot about our basketball, we know how important that is to UConn, to Memphis, to Temple and nobody knows precisely what is going to happen.”
