So what the difference?

A non-student athlete with a scholarship is given money and they are not scrutinized for spending money on school supplies.......

A student athlete with a scholarship is given money for books and they are scrutinized for spending money on school supplies.....

I think it all comes down to following the rules to the letter. They were suspended for a game they were going to lose anyway. Does it suck for them? Yes. But if you followed the rules you would get the spotlight of playing fsu and most on the team did. You didn't so you get to stay home. Their football careers are not over, they just got a slap on the wrist for a minor violation and it sucks but they will get over it.

Most scholarships for regular students include a stipend: A Set amount of money that the student gets regardless, that is SUPPOSED to be used on books. There's no rules or restrictions to how that money is spent, as it's part of the scholarship.

A Student-Athlete is only supposed to receive their text books for free. The NCAA does not specify that they can receive a stipend for books, but rather that they can only receive books for free. It is the responsibility of both the school and the player to make sure that they do not use that money for anything else. Unfortunately, a Tablet does not qualify as a textbook.
