FIU has got a tough schedule this year but they showed last year what they can do when healthy by blowing out ODU and UTEP. Not much talk about McGough this preseason but I think he is one the better QB's in CUSA

FAU is going to be battling for 6 wins this season. FAU has a favorable schedule, win 2 out of the 4 maybe games and they're at 6 wins.

FAU-
Wins- SIU, Ball,Charlotte,ODU
W or L - WKU, UTEP, Rice, FIU

I think so to. With our favorable schedule though, I will be very disappointed with anything less than 7 wins.

RE: Camp Reports
Primer: Rice played 31 Freshmen during the 2015 season due to injuries; the most in FBS. Injuries devastated us including the fact that QB Driphus Jackson played hurt for most of the 2015 campaign.

With that said, the keys for the Rice 2016 season will come down to the following:
1. Offensive line
2. Defensive line
3. Secondary

All three of those units are young and were pressed into action in 2015. However, Fall camp showed improvements in all three, yet concerns still abound. The offensive line has show the ability to run block but the question will be how well can we pass protect. Good pass protection will be the key for us especially with a new signal caller.

The Defensive line has talent but depth may require a true freshman present in the rotation.

The secondary...not sure but there were pockets of improvement. We had two scrimmages, but not enough to formulate a good understanding of where the team is. Western Kentucky will answer some questions for us.

Same for Charlotte. Our local newspaper is in financial shambles, so they pretty much only have beat writers assigned to the Panthers and Hornets.

Our staff just seems to be quite, maybe pulling a Vandy. Last year Vandy refused to share any info on they're team until game day , while they had the whole summer to prepare agasint WKU ....... Still didn't help 05-nono

RE: Camp Reports
Tech got a late grad transfer from Oregon St in CB, Cyril Noland-Lewis

Cyril Noland-Lewis has found a new home that happens to also double as his hometown.

The Ruston News Star, among others, has reported that Noland-Lewis is transferring into the Louisiana Tech football program. As he is coming to Tech as a graduate transfer, he will be eligible to play for the Bulldogs in 2016, his final season of eligibility.

The defensive back, who went to high school in Ruston, was at the Bulldogs’ practice Tuesday as Tech continues preparations for the season opener Sept. 3 against Arkansas.

Noland-Lewis started 10 games for the Beavers last season. Six of those starts came as a safety, the others as the nickel corner. OSU moved Noland-Lewis to cornerback this offseason, where he ultimately found himself buried on the depth chart in summer camp.

The 6-0, 198-pound fifth-year senior, who began his OSU career as a linebacker, played in a total of 37 games during his time in Corvallis.

What we do in the first 4 games will determine our season (@Ark, SCS, @TexTech, @MTSU). If we start 1-3 after playing Middle Tennessee, it's gonna be a hard row to hoe. If we are .500 after the first 4, we have a good shot to end up with 7 to 9 wins.

Oh, from the link I posted above, Davon Durant, the JUCO LB we brought in last year as a transfer, is 6'2", 235. He benched 505 this summer.

Some freshmen have come in and turned some heads, but with the depth now on campus, most of them will be able to be redshirted.

The 2 biggest question marks appear to be the OTs (solid and experienced with depth at C and OG) and the lack of size on the interior DL. The holes left at WR by the departures of Mike Thomas and Casey Martin appear to have been filled by 2 transfers from Last Chance U (one of which is a former FSU Seminole). And their backups are capable players who redshirted due to injury last season. The offense should be similar to last season IF the OTs perform.

Most are expecting the defense to be better with more depth this year with a much more aggressive approach.

I will be able to tell you a lot more in 3 months.

To add to this, the camp has been extremely competitive on both sides of the ball. One day the defense will dominate the offense, and vice versa. The stats of the scrimmages (while they may be skewed), show this. I'm confident that the defense will be high powered and fast paced and will give a lot of offenses some headaches.

I'm worried about the Offensive Coordinator. I've gotten mixed signals from what I've read and heard about him. He seems to be gruff and not willing to take the blame for mistakes or deviate from his gameplan. Also, I've heard from some players that he is definitely not the most liked coach out there and often plays open favorites among the players. Not really a "players coach" like the rest of the staff.

Can I ask what leads you to believe this?

Disclaimer. That statement is pure assumption- and based on he said she said accounts- and not at all 100% factual. I've only gotten that from the few Kentucky message boards that I've looked at when researching why he was let go. He's very polarizing among that fan base. Half love him. Half hate him. Their play calling last year was very straightforward and rarely adjusted to the game itself. I have a couple of friends who are on the team who have given me a first hand accounts of how he is obnoxious and arrogant towards some players and not towards others. As well as some receivers not taking well to his coaching style. Again, purely through the grapevine- but, I'm still cautious about our OC.

that is one I will dig into...have not heard those things yet, but my arse has been busy this year dealing with 'life' issues...

if true, this is where Hop earns his 'checks and balances'....

in the land of g5, the leash is always 'short'.....

RE: Camp Reports
UTEP's reports have mostly been on the positive side, stressing returning experience, much healthier (so far), and better depth.

Offense has lost a backup rb in Treyvon Hughes to a knee injury. Out for the season. The rest of the team is expected to be ready to go in the opener. New OC that Kugler sites as more creative which is a challenge under a run first, last and always head coach. Interested to see what they do in the opener.

Defense has a number of starters back and some reinforcements but changing from a 4-2-5 to a 3-4 due to having a new DC and more players that fit the new defense. Players seem to really like it but it will take a few games to see if this side of the ball is much better.

RE: Camp Reports
On offense, North Texas will be solid in the skill positions. Alec Morris has proven to be a huge improvement at the QB spot. I looks like he will be backed up by a true freshman (Mason Fine). Not that we don't have some options after Morris. Fine has just proven to be something special. Jeffrey Wilson will return at running back, but he won't be getting all the carries. Juco transfer Anthony Wyche has really stepped up in fall camp and earned some opportunities. Terian Goree (6'3") and his former high school teammate O'Keeron Rutherford (6'5") look to stretch defenses and North Texas has a hybrid slot receiver that should give C-USA defenses trouble. All will be major contributors at the WR positions. The O-line has many new faces, and will remain a question mark until we actually see them against an opposing team.

On defense, The Mean Green look to be more aggressive. The D line could be a strength this season. The switch in defensive scheme could end up frustrating QBs. Transfers and younger players have shown promise throughout camp. The secondary is probably the deepest I've ever seen at North Texas. Play-maker Kishawn McClain is returning, along with many of last season's starters. UNT added some quality transfers to the defensive backfield too. The Linebackers will probably the weakest unit in the defense, but does upgrade with the addition of a few transfers. Overall, I expect the defense to be much better then last season's. Some of that has to do with a change to a 3-3-5 defensive scheme.

I think North Texas steps up and beats SMU in week 1. The Mean Green could develop into a bowl team by the end of the season.

Probably the biggest question going into camp is finally answered. Ex USF QB Mike White has been named the starter for the Rice game Thursday. The post Doughty era has begun

RE: Camp Reports
I am less optimistic than I was prior to camp. We have some very talented players and depth but I think our inexperience and lack of QB play will ultimately be our downfall. We will have to be able to run the ball very well to win ball games. If your team has an above avg front7 y'all will have a lot of success vs our team
