USM basketball hires Clarence Weatherspoon
USM had a 3:00 PM press conference where it named former USM and NBA player Clarence Weatherspoon as an assistant coach. It was also announced the the Basketball Director of Operations Chris Croft has been promoted to asst coach. I didn't realize we lost 2 coaches but once I find an article attachment I will include it.

**EDIT** saw where asst coaches Jeremy Cox and Tom Shuberth are both gone. Cox left a few weeks ago for Stephen F Austin but no clue on where Shuberth is/has gone to.

here's a brief intro about Spoon that non-USM fans may not know:

Weatherspoon's No. 35 jersey is the only one retired in program history. His 2,130 points are the second all-time at the school and inspired the Philadelphia 76ers to make him the ninth overall pick in the 1992 draft. Weatherspoon set a franchise rookie record with 1,290 points

Don't know what kind of coach or recruiter he will be but think it's a great move.

Not a basketball guy but it excites me. Any excitement around our basketball program right now is a good thing.

Congratulations. Even if he doesn't turn out to be a great coach; his bona fides as an NBA Veteran ought to give him some serious recruiting ammunition for the Golden Eagles.

unfortunately, we lost our latest version of Spoon (jonathan mills) due to 'circumstances'.....so tragic and heartbreaking that story is....

any way you cut it, Spoon can only be an asset in contribution....and it's just refreshing to continue to see former greats come back and offer value any way possible....what a positive that is for this university over time....

the thread about Mean Joe reminds me of the same....

that's what it's all about....developing young men to be their best in every capacity on and off the field...Spoon can only help make that atmosphere better....and that will yield value in the end for both parties....

just another 'well done' move in the latest of 'well dones' since '12....

Remember Spoon during the old Metro Conference days. Wasn't MK Turk the coach?

It's great to get one of USM's best to return to Hattiesburg. Congrats

Watch out guys. Southern Miss will eclipse the DT days in the next 2-3 years. Doc is building it the right way. Fantastic higher for the program.

Yeah, I agree. This seems like a good move for USM.
