WOW...so not only is Coastal fighting the CHE and the Guv, you're fighting your local media as well. Best of luck!

Why is everyone against Coastal Carolina getting a larger stadium? Is it about CCU not having enough money to pay for most of it?? I just don't understand.

Sounds like real familiar stuff.

Get used to fighting. Get good at it. Learn to enjoy it.

It's the same stuff as has been discussed in the other threads. The final approval is tomorrow and this editorial reads like the CHE / governor wrote it themselves. It is a surface level argument but there is a reason why the general assembly worked around this and it is because the CHE just had us over a barrel with no way out except bringing in 100% of the money. We reduced the project, we brought in more private funding, we reduced the bond by using other funds ... nothing was good enough and they wouldn't tell us what would be good enough. It was like Lucy with the football.

Depends on what you mean by having money - we wanted to bond it out and pay for it with excess borrowing capacity. We didn't have $30-$40 million in cash from private funds to do it - but did have the available revenue to pay the bond. No state funds needed.

I still haven't figured out the biggest problem, I think the governor is just acting very conservatively for her political future. She said we shouldn't be expanding the stadium but should instead be focusing on education, and while I know it is different, Clemson and USC are both working on $50+ million football operation centers that they are bonding out as well.

The CHE cites runaway education spending but that argument falls flat when you see that we receive the least amount of state aid per student and as a percentage of budget than any of the schools in our state classification. Also, Coastal has some of the lowest tuition in-state. Coastal has been very fiscally responsible but they are holding us up as the poster child for rising tuition.

To be fair, Charleston isn't really considered our local media. Maybe one day they'll cover us decently but I think the Columbia paper has done a better job overall in covering us.

But I think this was a political hit piece sponsored by the governor in the form of an editorial.

"surface level argument" sounds exactly right. You just have to continue to fight--in a smart way.

*it is also vital to educate any "newbies" who may be naive about the politics of the matter.

That is not our local media, our local media is Myrtle Beach based, not Charleston. No one hates us more than Charleston. Coots and Tators are there who hate us. Citadel, CofC, and Chuck South are there who HATE us. It isn't a surprise, I wasn't expecting this the day before the SFAA meeting.

Nothing we have at ECU came without a fight, so keep supporting your school and eventually they will let you have nice things. Your logo looks like he's ready to duke it out. Good luck guys.

It is interesting that the other 2 "major" market newspapers(Columbia & Greenville ) didn't come out against us.

Our move relegates the citadel, college of Charleston, and to a lesser degree Charleston southern to fourth class citizens.

The other 2 major papers have gamecocks and tigers

Yeah, it seems coordinated and politically motivated.

I've seen CSU's stadium. That's more like third world instead of fourth class.

yep that's my first thought, some powerful people at the state level feel that money would be better served at USC or Clemson than at CCU, welcome to the FBS!!
