Memphis has #2 special teams in the country
according to ESPN rankings:

The Tigers have finished in the top three in my special-teams rankings for the past four years under coach James Shibest. This year, the unit returns intact with P Spencer Smith (47.2 YPP average, 39.3 YPP net), K Jake Elliott (60-of-78 in field goals over three years, including eight makes from 50-plus yards) and return man Jae'Lon Oglesby, who averaged 23.5 yards per kickoff. The only loss is Shibest, who left for Virginia Tech.

Losing Shibest could hurt but we have a lot of experience on special teams.

Jae'lon is overdue to run one all the way to the house.

Don't underestimate the value of losing Shibest as special team's coach. He has always been one of the best in the country for a long time. He turned our train wreck of special teams into an oncoming train.

Put Henderson back there as a second kick returner and they cannot kick away from a speedy return man on kickoffs.

I loved the way Coach Shibest got our special teams to really look and be "special". I hated to lose him.

I look forward to seeing what our new coaching staff can do to keep the momentum going.

Shibest was the only other one I hated to lose - beside Fuente. I had hoped we would offer him OC to stay on. Dude is obviously a football coach.

But this staff seems solid. I think we keep emphasizing ST.
