Seahawks Welcome No. 5 Charlotte on Tuesday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's soccer team returns home on Tuesday night to welcome No. 9 Charlotte for a 7 p.m. non-conference game at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks had their season-opening four-game win streak snapped on Saturday with a 5-0 loss at Florida Gulf Coast. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Cretens tallied a season-high five saves for UNCW, which outshot the Eagles by a 16-12 margin.

Junior forwards Julio Moncada and Stian Sandbekkhaug have combined to score eight of the Seahawks' 12 goals in five games this season. Moncada leads the team with nine points after scoring four goals with an assist while Sandbekkhaug, a transfer from Valparaiso, has contributed four goals.

Off to a 4-0-0 start, the 49ers visit the Port City after earning their first Conference USA win of the season with a 2-0 victory at Old Dominion on Saturday night. Charlotte, which is one of three teams in NCAA Division I without a loss or tie this season, has outscored its opponents by a 12-0 margin through the first four games.

Charlotte leads the all-time series by an 8-5-3 margin and has won four of the last five encounters.

After Tuesday's game, the Seahawks open Colonial Athletic Association play at home against William & Mary on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.

Charlotte will be a tough game, but getting them at home should help a little. Go Seahawks!

Hawks are controlling the contest early. And with under 33:00 in the first half, Phillip Goodrum blasts his 2nd goal of the season into the lower left corner, on a great pass from David Lozano!

It's the first goal Charlotte has allowed this season (out scored opponents 12-0 coming into the contest)!

1-0 Hawks

In fact, Charlotte was the last team remaining in the country that hadn't allowed a goal entering today.

Wow.

Women's team (6-2-2) faces Northeastern tonight at 7 and Hofstra on Sunday at 1; both games at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks began their CAA slate 0-0-1 after a draw with Charleston.

# 24-ranked Men's team (5-1-1) heads to Drexel for a Saturday tilt. They are also coming off a draw in CAA play against W&M last week; a big match @ Elon ended up getting rained out. On Tuesday the guys will remain on the road and face UNC in Chapel Hill.

No. 24 UNCW Visits No. 4 North Carolina Tuesday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Hoping to extend its unbeaten streak, the No. 24 UNCW men's soccer team completes its quick two-game road swing on Tuesday night as the Seahawks visit No. 4 North Carolina for a non-conference game at Fetzer Field. The Seahawks, who are 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, have posted a 2-0-1 mark in their last three contests following a 1-0 CAA victory at Drexel on Saturday. Junior forward Julio Moncada, who leads the Seahawks with 12 points, scored his fourth game-winning goal of the year with a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

North Carolina enters Tuesday's contest with a 7-1-1 overall record following a scoreless draw at No. 3 Syracuse on Friday evening. The Tar Heels, who are 3-0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, are unbeaten in their last four games while outscoring opponents by a 10-1 margin.

Tuesday's game will mark the 16th installment in the all-time series, which North Carolina leads by a 9-4-2 margin. The Tar Heels posted a 3-0 victory over UNCW last year at Fetzer Field.

UNCW returns home after Tuesday's game to host James Madison in a CAA contest on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m.

RE: 2016 UNCW Soccer
UNCW fell 1-0 to UNC on a 2nd half goal. The Seahawks were held to just 4 shots (none on goal), compared to 15 (6 on goal) for the Tarheels.

The Men's team will look to bounce back with 3 of the next 4 matches at home; 2 in CAA play and 1 against NC State.
