I'm talking on the night of July 18th and into the 19th, when it was announced by ESPN/ACC that the ACC Network was a go.

And at 4:30 p.m. on July 19th, the Big 12 announced they had reversed course, and expansion was being considered again. (Kind of pathetic that I know this stuff by heart, but this Big 12 stuff interests me. Was born in Texas, moved back there for 13 years, have always followed the SWC/Big 12.)

We have another data point in the big thread. The Iowa State AD said the ACC Network changed things. Minute 17 on the podcast that CBHSTiger linked, if you want to listen.

I know this sounds like a smartass question, but don't know how else to phrase it. How many different B12 officials do you need to hear say that the ACCN announcement changed everything before you will believe it?

Ok, now I'm clear on the timeline you're talking about. You have the times/dates down better than I do, for sure.

It has just felt to me that the expansion vote was coming either way. What changed with the network decision, was who some of the players are. BYU up, Florida schools down. Houston up, UConn down. Seems like most of the media has indeed been playing catchup.

I know this may also sound like a jerk, but going to be frank like you. If you choose to believe everything that the B12 has fed the media over the past year or so, feel free. But there has been plenty of smoke indicating otherwise.

You could be right, 87. No doubt there have been false narratives floated.

With the B12, all things lead back to Texas. The U of Texas. Not the Governor or the legislature, they have no impact this time at all. Those statements were just politicians being politicians.

And I believe the U of Texas had decided to stay at 10 schools, and wait for better options like Fl. State and Clemson. And then UT saw the 20-year GOR extension, realized the B12 would never get them, and gave in on expansion. With TCU and Tech voting in lockstep.

No worries, good discussion.
The Big 12 has been thought to be the straggler in revenue. They ended at third…in the middle. I will predict that not only will they bring in more revenue but that Fedex will take this league to an entire new level of marketing and financial strength.

Hi Strat57. I like your optimism, but I'm worried.

Here's my concern. I lived in Austin for 3 years and then D/FW for 11. It's hard in words to get across my point - but there is so much money in Texas. Corporate money, tech money, oil money, inherited wealth . . . When you live there, you can just feel it. Drive LBJ from North Dallas til it ends in Grapevine 20 miles later - office building after office building all the way. Then I move home to Memphis, and you see a few buildings downtown and down the Poplar corridor. Love Memphis and don't miss the D/FW traffic, but it's stunning.

I just don't see B12 types being that impressed with FedEx dollars. Doesn't hurt. And they are greedy bastards, so they would definitely take it. But Dallas and Houston have so many corporate HQs, and Dallas especially has a lot of America HQs of multi-nationals. Austin is bursting with tech and software companies. B12 will have no problem finding a sponsor - I'm convinced of that.

Quick anecdote to make my point.

When I lived there, Mark Cuban bought the Mavericks from Ross Perot's son, who is a real-estate guy, I think in 2000. Perot Jr. was a terrible owner & the Mavs were awful, so he was willing to sell.

So the story was this season ticket holder walks up to Perot, who rarely attended games, and said he wanted to buy the Mavs. Perot Jr. recognized him, cause he was the crazy guy in a tee shirt who had first-row seats who always screamed at the refs. But he had no idea who he was, or that he was a billionaire. Of course it was Mark Cuban.

Now, could you imagine an anonymous billionaire in Memphis?

Much more than just the bucks. This is not about sponsoring a couple of games. I bet if it was just that we would not be where we are today. I am thinking that is a major partnership in all facets to make the league more of a brand and not just an afterthought. Make it more like the $EC, if you will.

Like I said, by nature I'm an optimist.

But I'm worried. UT does not want us in, I'm convinced, and that's a big hurdle.

Like I said, by nature I'm an optimist. My father taught at Memphis State/U of M. all his life. I sold cokes and then hot dogs at the LB in the 70s at Tiger games. My siblings and I have a total of 8 degrees from that school. We all want this so bad.

But I'm worried. UT does not want us in, I'm convinced, and that's a big hurdle.

its all about compromise
