Exclamation Memphis Football Recruiting Examined (Last 10 years)
As Memphis prepares to enter the Big 12 (fingers crossed) I was curious about what kind of a boost joining a P5 conference would have on recruiting. It’s no secret, you MUST recruit at a high level if you want to have long-term success in a major conference. It’s good to have pipeline states that can help supplement your roster, but keeping local prospects home – especially the good ones – is key to building a program. I wanted to see who our main competition would be for those types of players, so I did some research. I charted every 3-star or better (Rivals) prospect from the Memphis area over the last decade. Here’s what I found… 10 highlights:

1. The city of Memphis produces a 5-star recruit once every 5 years, on average
2. The two 5-star recruits out of Memphis in the last decade have chosen LSU and Tennessee
3. The city of Memphis produces two 4-star recruits every year, on average
4. The city of Memphis produces seven 3-star recruits every year, on average
5. Memphis has signed more 3-star + local recruits in the last decade than any other school (15 total)
6. Ole Miss comes in 2nd (11 total), followed by Vanderbilt (9 total) and Alabama (7 total)
7. 13 different schools have signed elite local recruits (4 and 5 stars) in the last decade, including Memphis.
8. Tennessee has signed the most elite local recruits in the last decade (4 total)
9. Ole Miss comes in 2nd (3 total), followed by Vanderbilt, Georgia, LSU and Alabama (2 each)
10. Memphis has signed one 4-star recruit from the city in the last decade (Lonny Ballentine)

So…Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Alabama are the main culprits. Those schools alone combined to take 35% of the 3-star or better local recruits over the last decade. On top of that, they’re also responsible for taking 46% of the elite recruits from the city.

This is a list of teams that have signed 5 or fewer 3-star + local recruits over the last decade:

1. Georgia (4)
2. LSU, Mississippi State, N. Carolina, So. Miss, and Arkansas (3 each)
3. Wake Forrest, Texas Tech, Miami (FL), Colorado, Missouri St., Illinois, Louisville, Cincinnati (2 each)
4. Navy, West Virginia, Murray State, Auburn, MTSU, Minnesota, UCLA, Tulsa, Arkansas State, Missouri, Oregon, Tennessee State, Notre Dame (1 each)

Those schools, even though they signed 5 3-star + local recruits or less, still took 12 elite prospects out of the city. That doesn’t include the 4 mentioned above. With that being said, here are a list of schools that have taken elite recruits out of the city in the last 10 years:

Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, West Virginia, LSU, Mississippi State, UCLA, Oregon, and Notre Dame.

So, that’s just some raw data. Draw whatever conclusion you wish. I will say this, getting into a real conference will only help Memphis! Basically, Memphis produced nine 4-star or 3-star recruits each year. If Mike Norvell can close on 5-6/9 each year ... memphis will be on its way!

There was a national county by county hs recruiting heatmap done both raw numbers and per capita I think on deadspin somewhere. I'm on mobile, which makes it difficult to hyperlink. It was raw college schollies, not ranking the stars.
