Brilliant court vision, great ball handling, athleticism - he was something else. Love seeing the passes to Billy for the dunks.

RE: Throwback Penny Highlights
First off, a big thanks for posting that awesome video. There are so many of penny's college highlights that i haven't seen in a long time. Everyone please be sure to "like" the video on youtube.

My top 3 favorite players in my lifetime are magic johnson, michael jordan, and penny hardaway. Imo, if penny doesn't have knee issues, he would have been considered one of the greatest basketball players ever. Penny is the best basketball player to ever suit up for the memphis tigers. I'm not sure if there is any basketball skill he didn't possess. He literally could do everything.

2:33 major facial lol

Imo, the best penny hardaway highlight ever is not in this video. That would be the 3/4 court length bounce pass/ alley oop dunk from tony matlock to penny which is the only time i've ever seen a dunk like that... especially in an actual game.

**** was brilliant ... thanks for posting.

tmoney - was that 3/4 court length dunk the one where he basically demolished the defender and dunked right over him?

I wished that year was 90-91.

But I'm glad he went to the NBA when he did.

Not really. Tony matlock gained possession about the free throw line and threw a long outlet pass to penny running out by himself. The ball landed about the free throw line on the other end and penny caught it off the bounce and dunked it. The defender was behind the play.

Triple T posted a youtube video of it off one of my old vcr tapes, but it has been deleted off youtube unfortunately.

There are several big time facial dunks penny had on clarence witherspoon (southern miss) and also against somebody for uab that weren't in that video.

I've been working a lot the last few years and especially the last year, and i'm not keeping up with local stuff as much as normal like high school sports. I've sort of heard about penny coaching and heard some about the story of taking over for a friend, but i didn't really know the real story about penny coaching or how successful they were. This is a great story if you haven't seen it, i'm sure it's been posted here before.

I never got to see Penny play in Memphis because I was a toddler. Would you guys and gals say he was the most exciting and electrifying player to watch in Memphis basketball history because those were the loudest Memphis crowds I've ever seen in that video, even louder crowds during the Drose year?

Yes. Penny was much better than drose, and yes, the fans went crazy over him for his magical talents plus being a memphis kid. Most of us became orlando magic fans instantly after the 1993 nba draft. I'll add we had a shot at a ncaa championship in penny's 2nd year until david vaughn blew out his knee against arkansas.

Crowds were rowdier back then for some reason. People look at you crazy if you get to loud during a game these days

Not nearly as close to the Keith Lee years in the coliseum...the Tigers had a lot better teams back then though.

Would be nice to have some Keith Lee highlights. I never got to see him play at all. I was still apart of my dad when he played.

Penny led the team in 5 statistical categories, IIRC. He wasn't merely talented, he was dazzling. Like watching the kid in upward basketball that is clearly a star playing with everyone else. Penny was a true phenom.

Nearly all of the layups/dunks that Penny made would have been and ones today. Much more physical game back then.
