Every year here in Texas the THSCA has coaching school where all of the high school coaches from across the state meet up and listen to prominent high school and college coaches speak, visit vendor exhibits, network, and drink beer. This was the first year I got to attend. Me and my co workers stayed arrived Sunday and left this morning.
Anyways the most interesting part to me was the D1 coaches panel which took place Sunday night and featured all of the FBS coaches in Texas answering questions from the audience. Some of the coaches also gave lectures including non Texas coaches like David Cutcliffe of Duke, and Sonny Dykes of Cal.
Y'all should have seen the slight grin of satisfaction I made when I read that Everett Withers of TXST was giving a lecture, no way I would miss that. His lecture title had something to do with building a culture so I was excited to see what he had to say about that and if he would say anything about the progress he's made at TXST.
I told my friends and co workers about him and how great his press conferences were and had pretty high expectations for his speech. He led by introducing his staff and saying he wanted us to know his history before he spoke about the topic because he wanted to show us what bits and pieces he had learned from every head coach he had worked for. He then gave us a history lesson on all of his coaching jobs and what he learned from them which was pretty interesting, but unfortunately that took about 45 minutes of his lecture. When he got to the culture part he didn't really say much about what he has done at TXST but he explained what his expectations were and explained the base of his pyramid so to speak. Also, he was pretty funny.
Then this morning, during the general meeting where we elect the THSCA president Coach Todd Berry, formerly of ULM, gave a short speech. Honestly I don't remember much of what he said but I remember it being good.
Also encountered Kevin Sumlin and his staff while eating lunch on Monday. All in all it was a cool experience, and I'm proud to be from this state where football is so prevalent. God bless Texas
