RE: The Flutie Effect
Joining the rat race, we'll lose. We'd be playing by someone else's rules. Better to create a new race and be in the lead.
I agree that if UT were a top ranked team playing another top ranked team, particularly one of Miami's reputation at the time and if we have a Heisman Trophy candidate and if we win in a miraculous fashion on their home field, UT would get a spike in applications. But for BC, itt occurred naturally. It was a fluky, not Flutie.
Now is not 1984. Boston College did not have to spend huge amounts of budget to make that occur. Boston College's reputation nor their financials were made by that play. Athletics, particularly its most expensive football are not something to sell the soul for. If something nice happens while staying within reasonalbe cost, great. But to join the lemmings that see it as the God send? It's over valued. Then, 1984, is not now.
The creative are going to invest in the next opportunity. Buy low. Where are the less expensive opportunities, not yet recognized by the masses? Instead of competing for the most recognized talent, be it sports or academics, invest in finding the under recognized talent and program to develop it. If there's an investment in athletics, look to the sports with INCREASING popularity amongst the young. Help develop locally under-valued sports opportunities and build on those. This is how a UofToledo competes.
