Conference Champ Odds

Wow, I would put us on a tier with Toledo, maybe a HAIR higher since we get them at home.

Yeah, we're the Clear favorites, but I too don't agree with it. Going by theirs, I'd put us at 10/2 compared to NIU & Toledo's 11/2 since we have them both at home. But 5/2? There's some Bronco confidence rolling thru Vegas!

Wow, the Orlando Sentinel gives us a better preseason rank than the shaggy bevo boys.

Vegas isn't just predicting how well teams will do, they are also predicting how people will bet. By comparing the two they skew the line to a spot where they think will make them the most money.

I think it was a little too optimistic about our BCS Bowl chances. Despite losing people on D, we have lots of young talent -- but there is no reason to realistically believe our D is going to be anywhere close to our O. And that would be required to make the Big Boy Bowl.

We'd have to win ALL of these:
@Northwestern
@Illinois
@CMU
Northern Illinois
Toledo
GA-Southern

-- which is half our schedule. IMO, our chance is about 5% of doing that, given our D. Our O can make us win any one of them of course -- and obviously win half without questioning. But with our D -- it's also without question that we'll lose At Least 2 of those. Which is why I think talk of Big Boy BCS Bowl shouldn't come to mind any more than any projected 8W mid-major team.

The powerful O can make you beat anyone on your schedule. But a powerful D is required to win consistently, which we will not have.

It will be interesting to watch. If a successful season occurs, will the anti Fleck crowd be happy, due to it being the likely easiest way to get rid of him? Or if a mediocre season happens, will the Fleck fanboys be secretly happy, because he will have to stay put? Will the detractors be happy as they can say 'told you so'?

Me I am already looking forward to basketball

There will be no New Year's Day bowl game for the Broncos without any legitimate sustained success and as long as WMU remains as a stepping stone for new coaches or a last stop for old coaches there most likely will never be a level of sustained success that we all want. The most important thing is conference championships and then bowl victories anything more is icing on the cake.

WMU has not been a "stepping stone" job for anyone since Bill Spaulding.

Also, if it isn't a stepping stone, it has to be a "last stop," correct?

As far as your definition of "most important" - based on public pronouncements, our current coach disagrees with you.

I think you understand what I'm getting at though. MAC schools are a place for up and coming coaches, coaches in the Twilight of their careers or coaches that were never good to begin with.

As far as our current coach is concerned, as long as the team continues to improve on and off the field and as long as he still has the support of the student athletes he could jump with the Army Golden Knights and post it on his personal twitter account and I could care less. When the team stops improving and he starts losing the support of the players than it's time for him to move on.

Right now it sure is with PJ, assuming he carries things out more or less as expected.

Yeah, but NIU went to a NYD bowl being a stepping-stone place. Basically 2 great QBs back to back required it, too. Can happen. Every year a mid-major goes to a NYD bowl, and at least to Some degree it's a stepping-stone career place (although with places like Houston & Boise they are stepping stones not to places like Illinois but instead to places in the upper P5 budgets, which takes longer to develop).

The good news is:

(a) Tons of coaches were fired & hired at the end of LAST season, which makes less hires this year wanted
(b) Illinois hired Lovie Smith -- PJ was destined to go to Illinois and would have gone for anything, but that plan was thwarted (as well as my PJ vs Cubit fantasy)
© We pay PJ high on the MAC scale. He's not going to go to high-level G5 so easily, and probably won't want to unless the $$ is at the top of the G5 list and about doubles his now (which probably won't happen)

If we don't win the MAC -- and a decent chance we won't -- I don't think PJ's going anywhere. Also, if we do win the MAC going 6-2/8-4 in regular season via being the top of a tie-breaker and beating a not-all-that-impressive MAC East winner in a barn burner... I still don't think PJ is going anywhere at the end of the season.

And with the loss of QB & WR stars at the end of this year, he's not going to be poised to leave next year either. But when you combine this year, next year, and the year after -- yeah, he's going at some point.

We could make a NYD bowl by being like NIU did for a while -- keeping a key coach to pass the torch to. But to surely keep it going, one needs the HC to stay for a while to let the next HC develop well.

WMU not a stepping stone?

Well, Gary Darnell sure tried. And if you don't think Cubit would have taken the same opportunities Kelly, Jones, Meyer and Kill took, you are naive.

The only reason WMU has not been a stepping stone is because we have not had a coach successful enough for larger programs to pursue. Hopefully, that changes after this season or next.

Fleck certainly has been given all the resources to have enough success for larger programs to pursue him.

Unless he wants to remain here and accomplish what he has talked about - highly ranked, competing for a National Championship.

No MAC program will compete for the National Championship given the partisan way the system is set-up in favor of P5 programs.

Fleck is outta Kalamazoo soon after he wins a MAC Championship (which no current coach or player at CMU has ever achieved at CMU). I hope that is this season, or next.

Predicting a good outcome and then bragging as if it's already been accomplished is very mouth breatherish Ed.
