Nat'l rank School(conf rank) Career starts

34 Connecticut (1) 77
41 SMU (2) 73
45 UCF (3) 71
60 Cincinnati (4) 62
63 Temple (5) 61
68 Memphis (6) 59
81 Tulsa (7) 52
85 Tulane (8) 51
104 East Carolina (9) 39
107 USF (10) 36
119 Houston (11) 26
128 Navy (12) 8

I'm confused does this mean uconn has one o-lineman returning with 77 career starts? Also navy is going to have a terrible o-line this year. I would not be surprised if they end up being with Tulane at the bottom of the conference.

That number is their conference ranking. (For OL depth)

Sorry.

UConn is 34th nationally (1st in the AAC) with a total of 77 career OL starts returning from last season.

Here are last year's rankings for comparison purposes: http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/2015/JUN...une04.html

Ah ok that makes sense now.

Also, a low ranking is not necessarily fatal: UH entered last season ranked 109th.

Ya I saw that. I actually think the o-line will be better this year because they got so much experience due to injuries. Just think next year we could have one of the most experienced o-lines in the conference.

Every one of Navy's projected O-line starters (and most of the #2s) is a returning letterman. Few starts, lots of playing time.
Those predicting a huge Navy dropoff will be disappointed.

That why the concern at USF. We have alot of guys who played off the bench last year but didnt start. Good experience but we have no idea how good as a unit they will be. If our Oline is solid, well contend for a championship... if not, well be a 8-9 win team again.

RE: Phil Steele Florida cover
Glad coogrfan had link to last year's Steele ranking - in addition to his point about Houston entering last year 109th in this stat and doing okay, Navy was 97th and ended up with our most wins ever. Steele has been publishing this (and four other statistical contributor to his expanded overall experience rating) since 2009. Seven seasons and there is pretty much ZERO correlation between this stat and Navy's wins. 11 wins with the 97th ranking -- which is actually our median. Our other double-digit win season in that span (10-4 in 2009)-- ranked 106th. Our worst ranking before this year 107th, and resulted in the same number of wins as our best ranking of 35th.
I also looked at Steele's overall experience ranking vs results -- the scatter gram looked a LITTLE less random, but not much. That preseason stat ranked our 2011 team, our sole losing team of the timeframe covered, at 108th. But our 10 win 2009 team was ranked worse at 116th.

I am slightly curious how closely these correlate to other teams' subsequent results over the seven years. Bottom line for Navy is they don't. We are different. Guarantee you our depth chart distribution by class is more senior-laden and slightly more junior laden , and way closer to zero freshmen than anyone else in conferene. We lose a lot of senior starters every year, and every year we have a lot of first-time starter seniors.

Again, those expecting a huge dropoff from Navy will be disappointed.

Ah ok. Is really as accurate as he claims to be?

Yes. If you are a betting man like I am, he's done all the homework. You can trust me on that.

Cheers!

% of Yards Returning

http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/2016/JUN...une17.html

I took all of the yards each QB threw for as well as all of the individual rushing yards and receiving yards for each team. I then took all of the returning yards from 2015 and divided it into those for the percentage.

Nat'l rank School(conf rank)

5 SMU 93.82% (1)
7 USF 93.31% (2)
8 Connecticut 91.79% (3)
12 UCF 90.40% (4)
35 Temple 79.60% (5)
41 Houston 77.37% (6)
52 Tulsa 73.46% (7)
85 Cincinnati 59.50% (8)
103 Tulane 49.03% (9)
104 East Carolina 48.92% (10)
110 Memphis 43.51% (11)
123 Navy 28.02% (12)
