Coogs surpass 20K season tickets
According to the Athletic Director

To put this in perspective:

TCU sold 19,500 for 2010 after making their first BCS bowl in 2009.

Baylor sold 17,320 in 2012 after RG3 put them on the map by winning the Heisman in 2011.

UCF sold 16,049 in 2014 coming off their first BCS bowl in 2013.

Cincy sold less than 20,000 for 2009 after making their first BCS bowl in 2008 (because they broke 20K for the first time ever in 2010 after making their second BCS bowl in 2009).

***********

Houston is now chasing:

Utah, which sold 21,540 in 2005 coming off their first BCS bowl in 2004.

Boise, which sold 20,904 in 2007 coming off their first BCS bowl in 2006.

If we beat them, then we'll set our sights on the great fan base schools who don't need to make BCS bowls to sell a lot of tickets, like East Carolina (24,188 in 2011) and Fresno (25,242 in 2014).

The most Houston can sell is 29K. Capacity is 40K. 7500 are reserved for students. Visitors are allotted 2500. Another 1K are non-paid season tickets for employees, staff and corporate sponsors.

Congrats, now the goal is sustainability even when downturns happen, that's where ECU separates from the rest of us

Not sure where it stands now but I would imagine we'll be back around 22,000 to 24,000 this year. Attendance fell off the last couple years, interest just went stagnant. New regime is upping the interest level as we have already surpassed to total from last year.

To be fair our record year came a year after back to back conference championships, and was Ruffin first year. We usually stay 21-23k

UConn has been selling on average over 20,000 during the tough years since Edsall left. During the stretch from around 2007 - 2010 I think it was pretty close to 30,000. We've struggled to get people to show up on game day due to on the field issues though. I really hope we turn it around this year and start filling our stadium again.

We'll have an extra 1-2k season tickets automatically sold once the suites renovation is complete. Should push us to 24-27k on average.

Yeah, that's not the goal right now. We simply aren't going to sustain 20K season tickets playing 5-7 football in the American Conference.

We are selling tickets because we are nationally relevant. The goal is to stay nationally relevant, increase our season ticket sales and leverage our support to get into a P5 conference where we can sustain 20K season tickets during a downturn by virtue of the attractiveness of the schedule.

Houston's 20K season tickets do not include the student section, which is 7500.

This article makes it sound like UConn sells season tickets to students and counts them in the official number.

If so, then you can't compare Houston's apples to UConn's oranges.

I assume UConn announces tickets sold and not a turnstile count. If so, it's very odd to average 27-28K crowds after selling 23-24K season tickets. Unless students are part of the season ticket number.

I'm not certain but think we announce actual fans in attendance. As far as the student tickets, you may be right and that would be a big distinction. Either way, congrats. I want to see full stadiums in the conference.

Definitely apples to oranges. Uconn has done this during some horrible seasons, Houston is doing this after a great season. Houston's attendance remains to be seen. We will learn a lot after this year.

That is a fair point but I would like to point out our attendance has seen an overall 31.33% increase in the last 10 years (2006-2015) versus the previous 10 (1996-2005).

The average bump (1996 vs. 2006 for example) over the season 10 years previous was 28.87%.

This includes such stellar seasons as 3-8, 3-8, 3-8, 0-11, 5-7, 3-8, 5-7. and 5-7.....

We made (and continue to) make the necessary changes. I would think the floor for us is similar to 2014. Yes we went 8-5 but you would think we went 1-11.... the way we all felt and we still averaged 28k. Even if you discount our opening game that year (1st in the new stadium) we still averaged 26k.

All that is a long way to say our floor is now 26-28k and we will only continue to raise that bar. Games have become much more than just the game with the tailgating and overall atmosphere outside the stadium. It is and continues to become a place to be and not just when we are good though that helps....

Give us another year or two of our established growth and you will see that floor land at 30k. Times have changed on Cullen Blvd. We aren't the UH that was left out of the SWC.

Just wish we had this level of commitment 20 years ago and didn't wait 10 years to make the changes necessary.

Last year was the first time ECU didnt break 20K for the last several years. Last 3 years have been 19-21K. So if we are ahead of last year then we should be over the 20K mark again.

Great Job by Houston. They will likely sell the most season tickets this year.

My understanding from someone I know that works in the AD who isn't particularly fond of Compher (for the record) is that this comment is indeed true.

Also, congrats to Houston. I know it's a great feeling to see investment and success begin to pay off

You're 100% correct, Go Coogs GO 04-cheers

UH is not the program it was before... The interest level here (Houston) for UH is incredible now... With the new football stadium in place I don't see UH falling back to old nightmare days... Even after good HC's leave others will be in line to keeping this train well oiled and top recruits still walking those hall ways wanting to play here.

Yeah, things are different at UH
