Well in some cases I think an NFL market can help the local university. For example when JJ Watt went to the coogs game it brought alot of attention to our school which was good.

Not to mention Nuk, Harden, etc. When UH is the "place to be" for the weekend, the atmosphere is P5 worthy. The OU game will have a CFP/NY6 bowl atmosphere.

Apparently, some people are hyped up for the season opener between Houston & Oklahoma.

I work in Greenville SC, not far from Clemson. You see Clemson orange everywhere here - it is the de facto pro team for most of the state (along with USCe). It is unbelievable - so 57k doesn't surprise me at all.

Congrats to UH - making big strides toward an acknowledgement by the B12 that you belong. I wish SMU would follow suit...it is hard to watch your former peers (Baylor, TCU, now UH) continue to surpass you.

I guess we can still kick sand in Rice's face...03-lmfao

Coogs now at 21,236 at close of business today according to the AD.

Before renewals started, I was expecting 20-22K. Looks like we have a chance for 23-25K.

The most we can sell is 29K.

It would a big surprise if the sales go up to 25k. It would definitely shut those that continue to say that Coogs fans don't show up for games. Granted, we just had a wonderful season, but we are opening against Oklahoma. Not Memphis. 05-stirthepot

Attendance fell off the last couple years, interest just went stagnant. New regime is upping the interest level as we have already surpassed to total from last year.

Where have you seen this?

Was stated by Compher on Pirate Radio last week.

My understanding from someone I know that works in the AD who isn't particularly fond of Compher (for the record) is that this comment is indeed true.

Also, congrats to Houston. I know it's a great feeling to see investment and success begin to pay off

Seems to be more than a couple of people in there who feel that way about him. I know one personally as well.

Honestly I do not give a damn if the people working for him "like him"...All I care about is if he gets results from his staff. Contrary to the popular "hate talk" about Compher and the people who followed him here from NIU the feel I get from people within the Athletic Dept that I know is that he is no nonsense and does not accept laziness or incompetence and holds his staff accountable. I think that is how it should be...The jury is still out on him in my mind but we will know more over the next couple of years.

He has made several coaching hires now and has been involved with a couple of major capital campaigns, once all that has time to succeed or fail we will have our answer on Compher.

Ir's random, but I do hope that the university has plans of buying more land around the area to have more parking lots and space for game day.

Future plans include a parking garage for the lot on Cullen and Elgin across from Cougar Field.

Very solid ticket sales. How many people are in the Houston market? I don't much about that area.

I truly is! With the metal dome ceiling, it can get extremely loud which is why many teams do not want to schedule home games with us. It's considered one of the nicer arenas under 10k seating in the country.

In the Houston-The Woodlands MSA around 6.5M.
Beltway 8 to downtown I think around 2.2M.

Unfortunately, it seems being in a large city (Orlando, Philly, Memphis, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, New Orleans) is not conducive to a large college athletics fan base, with Los Angeles being the exception.

Does TheU have attendance problems?

Herman is trying his best to flip the negative into a positive though, and he is seeing early returns!

Western is a special place for basketball. I think only Temple in the AAC has a historical better winning %.

Doesn't Diddle seat 5 or 6K less now than it once did?....and the place was really made to be very nice and comfortable through he process?

Bowling Green is a neat place also. The Corvette plant and museum don't hurt the environment either. :)

Memphis and the Hilltoppers have met a few times and the games have always been very entertaining and usually close between 2 pretty good teams.

Here's some interesting reading if you're interested.......
