Vinny Curry
The guys who have been in the conference more than a few years will remember Vinny, most not too fondly as he single handily beat a few of the teams. You guys probably know he's on the Eagles now and he just signed his big 2nd contract ($47MM I believe). Well, it was just announced that he has started the Vinny Curry Project to benefit Marshall and has funded an initial $200,000 to start a scholarship for student athletes. The scholarship will be in the name of his mother.

Vinny is a Herd favorite among the fan base, not only because he was a great player, but because he was a model student, great ambassador for the program (even chose #75 for his NFL jersey to honor the crash victims), is a natural leader with an infectious personality and gets back to Huntington whenever he can to support the school. Vinny is the poster boy for the success of our non-qualifier program.

As Banker said this has always been Vinny, even as a player he was giving back to the university. It may have not been monetary then but it was his time in the community. So this article and support doesn't surprise or shock me at all.

I was at that game in 2011...still gives me nightmares. F Vinny Curry (and I mean that in the most complementary way)...He was (and still is) one helluva player!

It was he and that d@mn punter of theirs that did us in that day. About 5 or 6 punts that put us inside our on 5yd line to start drives; then they just turned VC loose on our o-line...which we had no answer for.03-banghead

Ahhhh Kase Whitehead. This was his best game in terms of getting punts off. He had none of his punts returned that day past the 9 yard line. Kase that day had 5 punts inside the 5 and 3 more inside the 10.

I'm in a fantasy football league that uses IDP. I've been reading on a few different sites they expect Vinny to have a huge year. He'll be one of my first defensive players picked. I'm the only Marshall fan in the league so the bias against him should allow me to grab him.

I love Vinny Curry. He is one of my favorite players of all time for so many reasons.

I wouldn't take him as first overall pick. Being the only Marshall fan, no one else will want him. Get him for a steal in the 2nd-3rd round depending on how many people are in your league.

2nd or 3rd round?

I'm not sure Curry is a 2nd or 3rd round pick in a draft of just defensive players. Is he one of the top 30-40 defensive players in the league?

He has been on a per snap basis. Problem has been that with the Eagles 3-4 they used him as a pass rush specialist from the DT position. They are going to a 4-3 with the new staff and the money they paid to keep him tells me his snaps are going way up. He will be a 15+ sack guy this year.

I can see how, with nine sacks two seasons ago, fifteen plus in an increased role seems very doable and perhaps it is, but that would pretty much guarantee he'd be top three in the league in sacks this year. I'm not saying it's not possible, but jumping to the top of the league when he's never finished inside the top twenty sounds a bit more daunting than just saying he'll jump from nine to fifteen plus.

Even if he were to get to twelve sacks this year, that would be a great number in the NFL and a good number in fantasy, it's just so much easier to reach on IDP than it is an offensive player, the pool of players to choose from is just so much larger. In 2014 Elvis Dumerville had seventeen sacks, but was only the 33rd highest scoring IDP.

Unless Curry is being talked up by the "experts"(and how often do the major fantasy guys even talk IDP?) I wouldn't be surprised if he goes undrafted in a lot of leagues. I wonder how many teams and defensive roster spots in MUsince96's league.

12 teams. There's 20 rounds. Defensive players don't start getting taken until the teens. In our league you start 2 defensive backs, 2 linebackers, and 2 DL. Along with the normal offense of 1 QB, 2 RB, 2WR, 1 Flex, 1 TE, and a kicker. Also the option of a coach is you want. It's 5 points if that coach wins, -5 if he loses. Six bench spots total.

That's far more than I was expecting, I think the only times I played with IDPs each team started one or two defensive players total.

By his senior year at Marshall he was 1st or 2nd in sacks in the nation for college. Don't see why he couldn't do that in the pros with the right defense and playing time. He obviously has the skill set and instinct for it.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but you are dramatically over simplifying.

For starters, his senior year he was tied for 6th with 11 sacks he also tied for 6th with 12 his junior year, but if you want reasons he might not replicate that at the NFL I can give you several by just looking at other players to have high sack numbers in college.

2008
1-Jerry Hughes-15(30 career NFL sacks, never more than 10 in a season)
2-Phillip Hunt-14(4 career NFL sacks)
3-Everette Brown-13(7 career NFL sacks)
3-Nick Reed-13(1 career NFL sack)
5-Victor Butler-12(11 career NFL sacks

2009
1-Von Miller-17(60 career NFL sacks, 18.5 in 2012 3rd in the NFL, 14 in 2014 6th in the NFL)
2-Brandon Sharpe-15(0 career NFL sacks)
3-Bruce Miller-13(moved to TE in the NFL)
4-Derrick Morgan-12(26 career NFL sacks)
4-Ndamukong Suh-12(42 career NFL sacks never more than 10 in a season)

2010
1-Da'Quan Bowers-16(7 career sacks in the NFL)
2-Bruce Irvin-14(22 career NFL sacks, no more than 8 in a season)
3-Brandon Jenkins-14(0 NFL sacks)
3-Jonathan Massaquoi-14(6 career NFL sacks)
5-Ryan Kerrigan-13(47.5 career NFL sacks, but only one season with more than 9.5)

2011
1-Whitney Mercilus-16(30 career NFL sacks, 12 in 2015 6th place)
2-Jarvis Jones-14(5 career NFL sacks)
2-Sammy Brown-14(0 career NFL sacks)
3-Brandon Joiner-13(0 career NFL sacks)
3-Trevardo Williams-13(1 career NFL sack)

Of the 20 players that finished in the top 5 in sacks from 2008-2011, only two have been league leaders in the NFL. I'll grant there are some cases like Miller moving to TE and Joiner going to prison, but I believe this is a large enough sample size to show that the correlation you're suggesting exists between NCAA sack leaders and NFL sack leaders simply isn't there.

Again, I'm not suggesting Curry can't do it, just pointing out what a jump it would actually be.
