I was thinking the same thing. Is ECU changing its offense this season? With an “Air Raid” up tempo style offensive philosophy I would think you would look for quicker more athletic lineman, maybe even slightly undersized. I’m just not sure of the significance of the OP, is this an asset or liability?
ECU is changing it's coach this season
I understand that, but does the new coach bring in a new offensive philosophy and because of that he’s recruiting different types of players, different than ECU has in the past?
I’ve only followed ECU football for 2 seasons but based on what I’ve seen and how the ECU fans talk about a high powered high scoring offensive philosophy, is the new ECU staff shifting to a more grind it out ground and pound philosophy? I know Duke last season averaged over 30 points per game and scored in the 40’s and 50’s a few times.
The stat about the OL size surprised me somewhat being ECU. If it was UConn or Temple, two teams with a run first, keep the game low scoring mentality it wouldn’t have surprised me, but this just seems to go against what ECU (and Duke for that matter) has done in the past (again I have a 2 year sample size and how the fans describe the offense).
It’s not a troll or a shot, just a legitimate question for ECU fans.

RE: ECU has the 13th biggest OL in CFB
The Air Raid offense typically recruited 6'6 and 6'7 guys with long wingspans for pass blocking. This has translated into us having an enormous OL when we try to bulk those guys up and shift them inside. So we're tall AND heavy across the board.

I'm not sure what our offense is going to look like. New coach, new OC, new QB... Might be much less passing and a lot more running, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

There were 49 pass plays and 37 run plays in the spring game, fwiw.

About all I could tell you from the spring game is that it looks like we will use the pistol formation a decent amount and try to throw deep a lot more. Of course I'd throw deep too with guys like Brown, Grayson, and Green on the outside.

Well the Air Raid comes from Texas Tech, and Scottie Montgomery has no ties to Texas Tech.
The Air Raid calls for tall lneman because they don't have to have any leverage just keep your guy in front of you for three seconds.
You'll notice that Washington State, coached by Mike Leach the creator of the Air Raid, has the fourth largest line in the country

I doubt you'll see anything crazy different in terms of recruiting on the offensive side...save that we seem to be moving more toward QBs that are more mobile, as well as keeping more specialized TE's on the roster (Lincoln Riley/Nichol began using Bryce Williams late in Ruffin's tenure, but we still had no depth at the position).
The offense simply appears to be more balanced -- meaning you'll see more under center and pistol formations...perhaps as many pistol formations as you will shotgun formations. And we won't spread out 5 wide as much.
That doesn't necessarily mean we're going to be huddling up and running the play clock down to 4 seconds every play.

Right we will still go no huddle and run the clock down to 4 seconds every play

Better be careful they don't eat your last place trophy.

Come on man, that was funny
Let him have his fun. When is South Florida ever going to get to have a winning season again. It's like when Oakland makes the playoffs. Don't ruin this.

RE: ECU has the 13th biggest OL in CFB
I have a former student that wants to walk on at ECU. He has talked / texted with the line coach but it seems iffy at this point. He is a good Offensive lineman that played on a very poor 4A team. He had a couple of offers from smaller out of state schools but wants to stay close to home so he is enrolling at ECU. I think the biggest hold up is his size. The poor guy is only 6 foot 1 or 2 and 305 lbs.

I feel sorry for the JUCO below. That size can't be good for his heart. While his bench is putrid for his size I'm surprised he's able to get off the ground at all no less a 19.5 vertical.
Quote:Meet 7-foot, 440 pound freshman John Krahn of Riverside Community College. He was 6 feet tall in sixth grade. He exists on a 3,000 calorie a day diet. In the weight room, Krahn bench presses 315 pounds and squats 410. He also has a 19.5″ vertical. But remember, he’s still growing. He is only 19 years old after all.
