OT: Calling all bibliophiles
I just saw this on Facebook and thought some of y'all would be interested. After all, we are a learned group of folks. I'm hoping to get at least 6 people to participate in a book exchange! You can be anywhere in the world (The further we get the better). All you have to do is buy your favorite book and send it to one person. You will receive approximately 36 books back. If you are interested, post "I am in" on the thread and I will PM you all the details!

I think that's an awesome idea and I'd be right there with you 4-5 years ago. But nowadays my phone will hold the entire library of congress so I don't use books anymore. I just download what I'm reading and then archive it and move on. But I hope it works out well.

PM sent. You don't need facebook, just enough friends via email or phone that would be willing to do it.

It's a pyramid scheme more than anything else. If it was Bernie, he wouldn't send a book until he received one. In this, you put your faith in others by buying a book for someone else first.

How do you get 36 copies back?

Does each person buy one copy of one book for each other person in the group? If so, then each person buys 6 books and gets 6 different books back. Right?

You buy one book only.

For example;
Person 2 (me) tells you about the exchange. You buy one book for Person 1 who told me about it. Person 3 (you) tells 6 people. Those 6 people buy 1 book each (6 total) for person 0. Those 6 people then tell 6 people to buy 1 book each (36 total) for person 3 (you). The more people you get involved the more you will end up with.

I've heard of this scheme before. Basically person A is usually out the money on a book that Person B received. Person B than tells others about the idea, and gets books from each of them, while he fails to send the books to Person A.

It's pretty similar to a scheme run by TV Evangelist's. You rely on faith and the kindness of others that you'll get what you spent back in return.

For the record, this scheme is considered a pyramid scheme under US Law and is technically illegal. Government doesn't push it that often because these things pop up and go away regularly. There was a similar scheme with gift cards a while back. Link http://www.thatsnonsense.com/receive-36-...id-scheme/

Not sure why you felt the need to post this when I readily admitted it was a pyramid scheme in post 8.
