First Week Games: Pre-season Discussion #2: Southern Miss @ Kentucky
Up for your consideration: Southern Miss @ Kentucky.

This is a great opener for the Eagles and one that all of C-USA should be watching. This game is very winnable, but isn't without its challenges given a new coaching scheme and playing on the road at a SEC venue, both potential game busters.

But USM could be up to the task. Offensively, they should be just as sharp as ever with Mullens at the helm and Smith in the backfield. Kentucky is expected to be much weaker (?) on defense this year and there are several question marks on whether the offense can be as effective as last year given that they have almost every one back, but do have new coaches to contend with. The big question is: can USM's defense stop a fairly prolific offense (potentially)...I'm not so sure.

I think Kentucky is opening up at -7.5 at home, but I think it will be closer than that. It's tough to win on the road and against an SEC crowd...even @ Kentucky. I see this at Kentucky 27, Southern Miss 24 (although I hope I'm wrong.)

OK, not as much interest in this type of discussion this year. Discontinuing the series.

I think that is fair. Right now, I see it as Kentucky 30 USM 20. I do believe Southern Miss has more than a puncher's chance, and if this game was 6 weeks into the season, I would give Southern Miss the nod.

If we weren't going into it with a new coaching staff I would like our chances a lot more as well as with it being this staff's first game together. My confidence level went from 75% to around the 30-40% chance.

I believe it to be fair to say that ALL of Hilltopper nation will be wearing the Black and Gold for that game. Also So. Miss fans beware of going into Big Blew country, you will be treated like crap.

I will definitely be pulling for the Golden Eagles to win. You won't know what to expect from Kentucky football. They can be good at times and really bad at times. Last season they almost beat Florida and had Louisville on the ropes but struggled to beat EKU (FCS) and the Cajuns at home.
Very winnable game for USM but Kentucky does have talent. Just depends on what Stoops can get done as a coach this season.

33-27 Southern Miss in a nail bitter. Last season opener Kentucky played team of any value was 2013; our friends from Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky handed Kentucky a very nice loss. Different year I realize, different coach but expect Blue to start off slow. Although total points may be generous I expect an Eagle win in a tight contest.

If we are going to be taken seriously as a conference this year, USM has to win this game (no pressure USM). We can't have our potential champ losing to an SEC team that will have a hard time getting bowl eligible.

This game will set the tone for USM for the year, and I like the Eagles for the upset in this one.

AGREED! IF we can get a win I think it will obviously get us off on the right foot and "should" help attendance for the following 2 games at home vs Savannah St and then Troy. A close lose won't be the end all but if we get blown out it will make for a long following week leading up to the home opener.

Yep, agreed. This game is analogous to WKU/Vandy last year, although I think Kentucky is a slightly better squad than Vanderbilt.

Too many unknowns with this USM team for me to predict a win. If the OT positions get quality play, if our replacements at receiver for Mike Thomas and Casey Martin come through and if our defensive line can replace losses on that line. Those along with the biggest question in a new coaching staff and how they coach will help determine the outcome. I think our new OC that was fired by Kentucky last year is a big part of this game. If he was actually a scapegoat for Stoops and fired unjustly, then we made a great hire. if he was justly fired by Stoops because of his failure as OC, we might have made a questionable hire.

Right now even with those questions, I think we have hired a very capable coaching staff and I am cautiously optimistic the Eagles will give Kentucky a very tough game. Can't wait for kickoff to find out.

The one thing that halfway makes me a little more comfortable with the new coaching staff is that Hopson was a head coach at his last stop. Granted it was FCS/1AA but at least he's not coming into it with zero college head coaching experience.

I agree, but beating an SEC team is a long way from beating a SWAC team.

I miss the USM swagger that existed pre-Eloss.
