Dowling College announced Tuesday that it will cease operations and shut its doors this Friday after 48 years.

News 12 has heard that employees were told they will be out of a job today, as students scramble to find a new school.

College officials say they were trying to work out a partnership with another institution, but it never came to fruition.

Dowling College was a member of the NCAA Division II East Coast Conference. The various student athlete teams include, Baseball, Softball, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Cross Country, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's Golf, Women's Volleyball and Field Hockey.

Funny you mention this. Just yesterday, it was announced that St. Catharine College in Bardstown, KY is closing. Sad since they've been around since 1931. They've had declining enrollment and couldn't pay their debts, so the school BOT decided to close.

They competed at the NAIA level in the Mid-South Conference.

If I had the money, I'd buy the Vanderbilt mansion at Dowling College and make it a private estate.

Dumb question: how can this happen?

If a school needs more money, and students want to attend that school ... raise tuition.

Except the higher tuition the less students. Its a double edge sword and it one that is now effecting quite a few colleges.

Maybe they should turn into a for-profit school to keep the school open.

The school has gone from 5,000 students in 2010 to 1,500 now.

With high cost of tuition now, more and more liberal arts colleges are struggling. As the saying goes you'll be majoring in unemployment.

I think the difference between the two was that St. Catherine was on the feds list of abusers of financial ordeal, and blamed the government on putting them in the same category with the Corinthian Colleges for profit fiasco.

The bad news for someone saying why not Dowling goes to for profit? The feds are really cracking down on those schools for fraud practices, and diplomats are worthless for today day's and age.

This article listed Dowling and other non-profit schools, plus they mentioned for pro-fit schools as well. Look at the thread I started about for pro-fit schools? That Excel Sheet did have Dowling listed as HMC. Most;y HMC 1, and would likely lose their accreditation. Many HBCU schools are listed as well. I may not see state public schools closing, but maybe merging with another campus to be one. But, there are many private schools in trouble in shutting down. Saint Martin's from Washington State in GNAC could close down. Kentucky Wesleyan, Bethel Kansas, Bethany Kansas, Bethel Indiana and several others could be closed down. University of Toronto is on the list as well and they are like an AAU heavy research institute. Southern Illinois and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville would be better off to merged the two campuses as one with a new name.

It's his stock in trade. I have seen more than one person mention that he is the sole entry in their blocklist.
