What??? It was well known he was a huge Tiger basketball fan dating back to his childhood in the 50's. Rarely missed a home game.

Wolo said that with the demise a few years ago of the Paul Harvey show, the only longer-running radio program in the USA is the Grand Ole Opry. Now I'm not 100% sure that Wolo is accurate here, based on his track record, but George has definitely made his mark.

Congratulations, George! Go and enjoy your family and take care of yourself.

The Grand Ole' Opry part is correct. 91 years in October 2016. Longest continuous running program in radio history. It was named by former Memphis newspaper man George D. Hay. It was on the air during the WWII years when crowds were not allowed to assemble. They played to an empty house. Congrats George. Best wishes and thanks for the memories.

I guess that makes a couple of shows I miss...Dennis Phillipi & Tony Brooks "And boy does my stomach hurt"...from WFSZ sports radio for the fans. Liked that station so much...I interviewed and got a job with them.

I was THRILLED when I was hired by them. My dad...who was dying from leukemia was super pumped for me.
The next day that I show up for work...they are going off the air. Thanks a @(#(@in lot John Rainey!

I'm Jalapeno Jorge'. I absolutely LOVED that show. What role did John Rainey play in its demise?

Most of you are too young to remember his columns and articles in Press Scimitar afternoon newspaper we had. He was a very good writer and got inside information for us commoners.

For a long time, Lapides had the best sports show in Memphis. Not really saying much, but it was enjoyable. Arrogant prick or not, he had good insight and was well-versed in Memphis history.

I dunno.
I used to see his producer Cam every morning on his way to work. We'd talk sports...and he recommended I apply to the station. I had prior radio experience from college..so I was hired after meeting with Rainey.
Ran home to tell my father. Went to work the next day...and everything was shutting down. Equipment being moved out of the station.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Years later I did finally make it to radio, I worked as a country music disc jockey here in Madisonville.
Funny thing was...wasn't a fan of the music...and didn't know many of the 'stars' of the day....tho I was able to fake it.

fun fact - back in the World Football League days, the staid ol' commercial appeal always used the franchise's official nickname "Southmen". the more populist Press-Scimitar always used the public's preferred name "Grizzlies". just a style thing

Will never the PA announcer. "Carry by Larry Czonka. Tackle by the Charlotte Hornets."
