That's actually funny.
Personally, my opinion has nothing to do with any of my friends, just about Lapides. I hope he can kick the condition he has. You just hate it for the guy. I'm simply not a fan of his in the least.

What??? It was well known he was a huge Tiger basketball fan dating back to his childhood in the 50's. Rarely missed a home game.

Typical UT graduate who lives in Memphis. Goes to games but the university is not good enough for him or his school in sports or other wise.

Lapides showed loyalty to the University of Memphis, Mississippi, and Tennessee-Knoxville. Considering his business that made sense.

Just because he reported flaws and mistakes doesn't mean he didn't love the Tigers. His job was to report the sports news and he did so with integrity often sparing details that would have embarrassed individuals. He takes many stories to his grave that should rightfully remain untold.

Collectively, He was part of more Memphis sports history, knew more sports figures, worked in more sports venues and impacted more components of the sports world in Memphis than any other person I have ever ever heard about.

You don't have to like a public figure to appreciate their impact.

He just seemed to point out so many more flaws and mistakes of Memphis, than he did Old Miss. He seemed very reluctant to ever criticize them - and we all know they have deserved it over the years.

In The Pyramid his seats were a few rows above mine and he was there every game when he could have easily gone for free and sit on press row.

Thinking about my friend George Lapides

CoachCal.com
By John Calipari on June 11, 2016

I want to say something about my good friend George Lapides, but I’m having a hard time coming up with the right words.

George has been a longtime, iconic sports writer and radio personality in the city of Memphis and beyond for the last 45 years. He’s the voice every fan wants to hear from. He has had friendships with everyone from Bear Bryant, to Muhammad Ali, to Gene Bartow, and on and on.

If you were involved in the mid-South and you were involved in sports, he knew you and had a relationship with you, but more importantly you trusted him.

When I walked in, he made it clear even then that you were going to have to prove what you were, and you weren’t going to fool him because he knows coaching and he knows basketball. By the time I left we had become really good friends out of the respect that we mutually shared for each other.

He’s been someone I could always get an honest answer from. He’s been someone who would always tell me the truth even if it hurt. He’s someone I’ve grown to love.

George has been a sports editor and even an athletic director. He’s worked for newspapers, TV and radio. He’s done it all and he’s done it with great passion for his work and his city.

I want to send my thoughts and prayers to George and his family as he goes through this tough time. I’m thinking about you, my friend, and I know you will continue to fight this disease the same way you have been for the past few years.

Unbelieveable the amount of venom being spewed at the retirement of one of the few great radio personalities in this city. He belongs right up there above Jack Eaton and Rick Dees. I remember always reading his stuff in the Press Scimitar and listening to him whenever I could on the radio over the past 40 years or so.

He knew his stuff and he knew the people he talked about and was a HUGE Memphis fan. Name dropping? Not so much if you knew them, and kids, as you get older you tend to reminisce a bit. So his days with Bartow and Bear and Archie, etc were a big deal to him.

I thought he was great on the radio and, unlike the goofballs in town these days, talked about sports and let the person being interviewed talk. The guys we are listening to now talk about themselves more than Lapides ever did, name drop as much, we just don't know who they are talking about, spend the same amount of time talking about their sponsors and, worst of all, talk more than the guests they are supposed to be interviewing.

Calkins is the only one on the air now that can even be put in George's category. George is a legend and I wish him only the best in his remaining time with us.

Good post. George was a true journalist while at the P-S and very knowledgeable in the days I listened to him. Hard to find guys now who do not acts as if today is the end all in sports. Lose one game you are in trouble-win one you are great. Don't understand media these days. George knew sports.
